Tutorial to Update Acer Iconia A500 with Jellybean 4.1.2 Firmware

Acer Iconia Tab A500Acer Iconia A500 smart tablet can now be easily updated with the latest Jellybean 4.1 release of firmware. Though it’s not yet officially released by ACER or Google for A500, it’s an SDK port version and there are many functionalities which doesn’t work. There is no exact date on by when there will be a Official roll out of Jellybean 4.1.2 for Acer Iconia A500. For your convenience, we have also listed below a detailed guide, features which are working along with the screen captures and a Video to guide you on how to update. Disclaimer: This Jellybean 4.1.2 release should only be applied to the device which has model name as Acer Iconia A500. This should not be applied to the NETWORK LOCKED version of Acer Iconia A500. For applying this update, you got to root your Acer Iconia A500 device and also it should have the custom recovery image installed. Enable the USB Debugging from the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging” and also you will have to ensure that the minimum battery life should be 50% so as to ensure that the phone doesn’t get turned Off in the middle of update.

In the process of applying this update all the data will get lost, ensure that you have created a local copy of all the target back up files with the help of below mentioned steps. Don’t use PC Suite to back up the data as it won’t recognize the device in the custom ROM firmwares.

SMS – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Images, Songs, Videos, Files – Copy to internal / External SD Card,
APN and MMS Settings – Note down from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names

Procedure to Update ACER Iconia A500 with the latest Jellybean 4.1 Firmware:

  • Assuming that you have rooted your Acer Iconia A500 device, you now need to install the Acer Recovery application from Google Play Store to install the custom recovery image.
  • Download Jellybean Update Package from here to your computer and connect your Acer Iconia A500 device to the computer with the help of original USB cable Place the downloaded zip file in your device. Ensure that you are not placing the file deep into the sub folders.
  • Disconnect the device and turn Off so that it can be then entered in the recovery mode. The recovery mode in Acer Iconia tab A 500 can be entered by Pressing the Volume Down button and the Power button till you the recovery mode screen is seen.
  • In recovery mode, select Nandroid Backup option so that just in case if anything goes wrong then you can easily get back to the Stock version of the firmware.
  • After this you need to select the option of Wipe data/factory reset then followed by Wipe Cache partition. Additionally from the advanced options, you also need to clear the Dalvik Cache in the recovery mode so as to just ensure that all the cache files are deleted from your tab.
  • Now, you will have to select the option of “install zip from SD card” and then “choose zip from SD Card” after which you will see the list of files which are there in the phone. Select the Jellybean 4.1 package which you have placed in the device.
  • To install this update, it will take around 4 – 5minutes. Once update is applied, the device will land back to the recovery mode screen. In recovery mode screen, select the option of “++++ Go Back ++++” and need to choose the option of “Reboot system now” to reboot the system now.

Note: Just in a rare case if the device is not updated and it gets into the boot loop mode, you need to again clear the cache from the recovery mode and retry the whole process from the start.
