How to Unlock Asus Zenfone 2 Bootloader – Simple Guide

Asus Zenfone 2 users can now unlock the bootloader of the device easily so as to make the most of it. While companies like HTC and SONY offers official ways to unlock the bootloader, as of now there is no such official tool from Asus. Thanks to ravian29 user from XDA who has published the unofficial way with which you can unlock the bootloader. Once the bootloader is unlocked, the device can be then rooted and installed with the custom ROM firmwares. So, let’s check out on what are the steps with which you can unlock the bootloader.

Quick Pre Requisites:

  • Battery left in your Asus Zenfone 2 should be left with the minimum of 50% plus.All the data in your device should be backed up manually with the below mentioned steps manually and not with the help of any automated PC tools.
  • SMS – Download SMS Backup & Restore app and create the backup. Once done, transfer the backup file to your computer,
    Call Log – Download Call log Backup & Restore app and create the backup. Once done, transfer the backup file to your computer,
    Local Files – Transfer all the data like photos, downloads, music files, videos etc. to your computer.

    Navigate to the path “Settings > Developer Options > Turn USB Debugging On”.

    Assuming that you have followed all the above mentioned steps, lets proceed to the next step where we have detailed the list of instructions which will help you unlock the bootloader.

    Procedure to Unlock Bootloader of Asus Zenfone 2:
    For unlocking the bootloader of your Asus Zenfone 2, there are 2 methods which are mentioned below. One can follow any method to unlock the bootloader.

    Method 1:

  • Download the Black splash screen to your computer and once done, you need to connect your device to the computer using original USB cable.
  • Open the command prompt window in your computer to enter the below mentioned commands one after other followed with the enter key in your Windows based machine;
  • Adb shell
    Su
    getprop ro.isn > /factory/asuskey
    reboot bootloader

  • Now, the device will be rebooting in the recovery mode and the device will update and restart on its own after which you will see the splash screen in white color which means that the factory lock has been removed.
  • Open the ADB folder in your computer and open the command prompt to enter the below mentioned commands in the command prompt;
  • Adb reboot bootloader
    Fastboot devices

  • After entering the fastboot devices, the command prompt will show the connected device info which means that device is successfully detected by the computer.
  • fastboot flash splashscreen splashscreen.img

    Now, restart the device to see the splash screen as black which means that the device bootloader has been successfully unlocked.

    Method 2:

  • Make sure that you have installed all the ADT packages from Official Android site.
  • Download the Modaco Superboot file in your computer.
  • Once downloaded, extract the same by right clicking on the same in your computer.
  • Now, plug your device to the computer with the original USB cable and open the superboot folder which you have extracted the downloaded zip file.
  • Open the command prompt in your device to enter the below mentioned command;
  • adb-windows reboot bootloader (after entering the command, press enter and wait for the device to get rebooted)
    fastboot-windows oem unlock (this command unlocks the bootloader)

  • If you see any prompt on the screen, you need to select the option of “Yes” with the help of volume rocker keys.
