How to Update Nexus 7 (2013) with Lollipop 5.1.1 LMY48G Firmware – Guide

Google has announced the Lollipop 5.1.1 update for the Nexus 7 2013 variant. This new update is the build which is dubbed as LMY48G comes only to the WIFI version and very soon this will be passed on to the other variants too. This update is more of a kind of a maintenance update which refreshes the drivers and other bugs which were otherwise hampering the overall performance of the device. This update is very minor and the bootloader of this update is the same as that of before. While there is no exact change log provided by Google, let’s check out on how you can manually update your device with this one;

Pre Requisites:

  • All the updates in your device should be backed up manually and not with any automated tools as it may not help you restore the data.
  • SMS – Download SMS Backup & Restore app and create the backup. Once done, transfer the backup file to your computer,
    Call Log – Download Call log Backup & Restore app and create the backup. Once done, transfer the backup file to your computer,
    Local Files – Transfer all the data like photos, downloads, music files, videos etc. to your computer.

  • Nexus 7 should be left with the minimum of 60% battery charge for successful firmware installation.
  • Navigate to the path, Settings > About Device and tap multiple times on the build number so as to enable the developer mode till you see the message that which indicates that developer mode is enabled.
  • Navigate to the path Settings > Developer Options to enable the USB debugging mode.
  • Nexus 7 device should be rooted and also bootloader should be unlocked. ADB should be installed and configured in your device.
  • Assuming that all the above steps are adhered, lets proceed to the detailed guide which will help you install the Android 5.1.1 Firmware.

    Procedure to Update Nexus 7 (2013) WIFI with Lollipop 5.1.1 Android OS:

  • Download Android 5.1.1 LMY48G Firmware for Nexus 7 to your computer to extract the same in your computer to get the .tgz image. If the file is having the .tar format, you need to rename it to .tgz.
  • Copy the extracted and renamed file to the fastboot folder.
  • Connect your Nexus 7 with the computer using original USB cable. In the fastboot folder, press Shift + Right Click in the empty area to click on the “Open Command Window here” option.
  • In command prompt, enter the below mentioned command one after other in the same sequence;
  • • fastboot flash bootloader bootloader-filename.img
    • fastboot reboot-bootloader
    • fastboot flash radio radio-filename.img
    • fastboot reboot-bootloader
    • fastboot flash system system.img
    • fastboot reboot-bootloader
    • fastboot flash userdata userdata.img
    • fastboot flash recovery recovery.img
    • fastboot flash boot boot.img
    • fastboot erase cache
    • fastboot flash cache cache.img

    So there you go, you have now successfully installed the Android 5.1.1 Android OS in your Nexus 7 (2013) version of firmware.
