How to Update Nexus One to Android 2.3.6 GRK29F Firmware

Quick Pre Requisites:

  • In the process of updation of the device, there is a probability that you may end up losing the data which is stored in the phone. So, it’s necessary to backup the same so that just in case if you lose them you can then you can restore the same easily. With the help of some simple links and tips you can easily update the same easily.

SMS – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
ContactsSync with the Gmail application,
Call Log – Call Log and Restore
Songs, Videos, Files – Copy to internal / External SD Card,
APN and MMS Settings – Note down from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names

  • Also, you will have to ensure that you should have a minimum battery life of 50% so that the phone doesn’t get turn Off in the middle of firmware update.
  • Also, ensure that all the firewall tools as well as the Antivirus suites inj your phone as well as in your computer are completely closed so that these don’t interrupt the process of firmware update.

Instructions for Custom ROMs:

Just in case if you have already on any of the Custom ROM version and have rooted the phone then you need to get into the recovery mode and clear the cache and other data which is there in the phone. Once you get into the recovery mode, you will have to choose the options like “Wipe data / factory reset” and then followed by the option of “Wipe Cache Partition”.

To enter into the recovery mode in your Nexus One, you will have to hold down the trackball and press the power button so that you can enter your Nexus One into the recovery mode. Please note that if you don’t get into the recovery mode then you will not be able to clear the cache. Just in case if there are any lag fixes which are configured in your phone then kindly disable them all or else it will interrupt he updation process.

Procedure to update Gingerbread 2.3.6 on Nexus One:

  • First up you will have to download the Gingerbread 2.3.6 GRK39F zip file after which all you need to do is to just place the same in your phone by renaming it to “update.zip” and not as “update.zip.zip”. Please note that the renaming is correctly done.
  • To place this file in your phone, you need to connect the phone with the computer using the USB cable and then you will need to place this file in your SD Card of the phone in such a way that you are not placing this file deep into any of the sub folders or else it will be difficult to find the same in the recovery mode.
  • Once you place the file, you need to pull off the USB cable and then you will have to turn Off the phone so that you can then enter into the recovery mode. To enter into the recovery mode you will have to hold down the trackball and press the power button after which you will see that you will see an option called “Bootloader”, select the same.
  • Now after this, select the recovery mode, the phone will now be showing the exclamation mark along with a triangle. Up next, you will have to press the Volume Up button as well as the Power button simultaneously so that the recovery screen is shown up.

Nexus One Recovery Mode

  • In the recovery mode, you will find an option called “Apply SDCARD Update.zip”, just select the same and choose the update.zip file which you have placed in the phone so that the updation process is commenced.
  • In the process of updation it’s highly recommended that you don’t interrupt the process of updation or else there is a high probability that you may end up bricking up the phone. Just in case if the process gets interrupted on its own then you need to repeat the whole procedure from the start.
