Pre requisites for Firmware update:

  • Please note that before proceeding to the updation of the Galaxy S 4G, ensure that your phone is having the model number as Samsung Galaxy and not any other similar looking phones as if you install with this firmware then some of the functionalities won’t run and could even lead to serious damage to your phone.
  • Ensure that all data which is present in your phone is backed up in your computer which can be done by using the Astro File Manager application. Also, you can manage all contacts by syncing all of them with the Gmail.
  • Next up ensure that you have removed the SIM card as well as the external SD cards if any in the phone,
  • After this, ensure that you keep some things like USB cable which you have got with your Galaxy S 4G device,
  • Most importantly you need to ensure that your phone has atleast 50-60% of battery power left, this is just an advisory which if followed then you will not experience any difficulties as while updation of the device the battery consumption is at a maximum,
  • Ensure that your computer / laptop which runs on a XP, Vista or Windows 7 OS the firewall and other antivirus programs are disabled and also you should have admin privileges to download and install the software including the drivers and also along with this you will be requiring the USB port on your computer which supports USB 2.0.
  • (Optional) Many of the Galaxy S 4G users have reported the problem that they are unable to get into the download mode which is the top most necessity for updating your device, so for all those we came up with a tutorial here, just follow the given instructions and you can easily fix the download mode and also the recovery mode bug. This procedure is only for those whose devices unable to get into the download mode and the recovery mode.
  • Please note that flashing with the firmwares doesn’t mean that you are ROOTING Galaxy S. If you have flashed with Voodoo Lag fixes then too you can easily flash your device with this firmware.
  • Ensure that you have closed the KIES completely and also disable any firewalls, antivirus if any. Be rest assured as all the files which are mentioned in this article are safe and virus free.

Improvements in Gingerbread 2.3.3 update:

  • his all new update of Gingerbread 2.2.2 ropes in the better overall refinement of battery performance as it’s optimized further to give long battery life. With this update of 2.3.3 VUVKF1, the battery life has been optimized by around 15% overall and also the quadrant ranks have been substantially improved.
  • Apart from the battery life, this new update comes along with an all new faster and more interactive user interface which is the best part of this update.
  • Many of the users faced issues with the GPS as well as frequent disconnection in the Wi Fi after a particular interval of time which is now overcomed in this update of Froyo.
  • Now, the free RAM too is increased and it also releases more RAM to the users directly so that the phone becomes much faster as the RAM availability has been increased to the users so that apps can make use of it and also the start-up time has been marginally reduced by two points. The quadrant speeds have been substantially improved and also the user interface is now much speedier than before. This update is considered as the major update with almost all the fixes.

Procedure:

  • First up you will have to proceed and download a file which is Gingerbread 2.3.3 firmware file for Galaxy S 4G. This version of Gingerbread for Galaxy S 4G is dubbed as the VUVKF1_2.3 and is not an official version. As soon as you download the same, you just need to ensure that you extract the same to your desktop and in the process of extraction, it will prompt you to enter the password. Enter the password as “androidadvices.com without the inverted comas. Please note that you should not rename the file in any manner or else the files won’t be recognized by the flashing tool which is Odin in this case
  • After extraction of the Zip files, you will see the files in that folder as shown in the below screen shot.

Galaxy S 4G Extracted Files

  • Please note that if you even doesn’t have one file from the above shown screen shot then you will have to again download the zip file and extract the same. Now, once you complete extracting the files, just click on the Odin folder and then the Odin.exe file to open that flashing software client. There are many versions of Odin which are currently available and are provided by other forums but beware of using them as they are not recommended and the one which comes along with the above mentioned zip file is the recommended one. So, just open the same in your computer after which it will look like the below screen shot,

Odin Galaxy 4GS

  • So, once you open the Odin in your computer, you now have to switch Off the Phone and need to enter the phone in the download mode. To enter the phone in the download mode, first of all you will have to turn Off your Galaxy S 4G and then just hold down the Volume down key and then press the Power ON button simultaneously to turn ON the device in the download mode after which you will see the screen as shown below.

download mode

  • Now, after this you will have to connect the phone to the computer where you have downloaded and extracted the zip file from the above link. Please note that while connecting the USB cable you will have to make sure that the Odin software is open as mentioned and shown above, as soon as you connect the phone to the Odin, the ID COM block will turn yellow after which you will have to enter the files by clicking on the corresponding options as shown below,

Phone – T959VUVKF1-Phone-CL1020302.tar.md5,

CSC – SGH-T959V-CSC-TMB-VIBRANTP.tar.md5

Note : Ensure that the Re Partition option is not checked and you double check all the files before proceeding.

  • Now after you feed in the files, you will have to double check the same and then you will have to proceed and click on the “Start” option to start the firmware update process. After clicking on the start, you will see that the firmware will be installed in your phone within a time of not more than 5 minutes. After this, you can see that the flashing process is being in process and you will have to make sure that you don’t interrupt the flashing process as this may be fatal for your phone. So, after few minutes of time you will see the Odin screen as shown below,

Galaxy S 4G Odin Files Flashed

  • Now, that’s it as soon as you see that the above screen is shown in the Odin, you will have to wait for the home screen to see in the phone and there you go, you have now successfully installed the latest firmware of 2.3.3 Gingerbread for your Galaxy S 4G Android phone. Now, after this you will have reset the phone just to ensure that all the cache data is erased which can be done by following the below step.

For checking on which firmware you are currently on, you will have to go to the Settings > About Phone > Firmware Version where you will find the version of Android OS where it will show Froyo 2.3.3. So, let us know if you face any sorts of issues as we will see to it that all issues are resolved. Alternatively, you can also dial *#1234# to check the version number. Do let us know if you face any issues while updating as we will ensure that all the problems are solved.

I was finally able to make this work. I have a galaxy s4g from t-mobile and was having a heck of a time getting into download mode. the three button thing didn’t work. What you need to do is take out the sd card and the sim chip. With the phone off connect it to your computer via usb. then hold down both the volume up and down. after 15 seconds or so the phone will turn on and go into download mode.

Hey, started the whole program, the message in odin3 (bottom left hand corner) it says setup connection. It doesnt seem to move from there, there is nothing happening in the phone either it is just the download screen mode. You have mentioned it was less 5 minute. the program odin seems to hang. Got idea what is going on? Or what I should do?

    1. PLUG YOUR PHONE INTO COMP, ON PHONE IT SHOULD GIVE YOU 3 OPTIONS LIKE KIES, MEDIA PLAYER, AND MASS STORAGE.. CHOOSE MASS STORAGE, WIN 7 SHOULD AUTOMATICALLY INSTALL ITS DRIVERS.

2 UNPLUG YOUR PHONE FROM THE COMP BUT LEAVE THE USB CABLE PLUGGED INTO THE COMP…

3 HOLD VOLUME UP + VOLUME UP AT THE SAME TIME !DO NOT! PRESS THE POWER ON KEY
NOW TAKE YOUR USB CABLE THATS PLUGGED INTO COMP
    PLUG IT INTO THE PHONE

AND DOWNLOAD MODE SHOULD POPUP! YEA YOU DONT EVEN HAVE TO PRESS THE POWER ON KEY!

JUST PRESS THE VOLUME KEYS AND PLUG THE USB CABLE IN. IM SURE YOU GUYS WILL HAVE ODIN RUNNING SO YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO NEXT! GOODLUCK TO ALL! too lazzy to turn off caps.. =D

HI MARK HOW CAN I PUT THE FILE IN ODIN? I TRIED THE KB5 CUSTOM TAR AND IT WONT LOAD INTO THE PDA FOR SOME REASON. AND WHICH ODIN DOWNLOAD SHOULD I GET I HAVE 1.85 AND IT DOESNT RECOGNIZE THE KB5 FILE? AND DO YOU KNOW BY CHANCE IF THE WIFI ISSUE IS FIXED GOING BACK TO FROYO BECAUSE THE WIFI SUCKS BIG TIME ON THE GINGERBREAD FIRMWARE!?

    • Reply Mark Laws September 19, 2011 at 10:20 am

Hello Pantera56, When you go to the link and download the files I put it in a .rar file don’t extract the KB5 just move it to a location where you can find it like your desktop then load it from Odin just click on the PDA then click on the unzipped KB5.rar file it should load fine.
If you have any questions and want a quicker response

Unzip odin with win.rar google it and download it

DON”T UNZIP Kb5 File leave intact.

    Dear Neal,

If this is a Gingerbread update, after upgrading the firmware…..

“For checking on which firmware you are currently on, you will have to go to the Settings > About Phone > Firmware Version where you will find the version of Android OS where it will show Froyo 2.3.3.”

Shouldn’t this say gingerbread 2.3.3 rather than Froyo 2.3.3 ???

Ok first of all most i updated mine from ur 2.3.4. post and the firmware is still 2.3.3 so u better erase that post. second. the ram story is bs because the firmware do not have more ram and actially since i updated it my phone is using more ram than when i had froyo. when i used to clear the memory it used to go down to 150 to 170 now with this update it wont go lower than 200. But besides that the phone runs smoother and thats a plus

I was able to update successfully. So far the only issue i am having is the iMap email setup. Before updating to 2.3.3 I had two Imap accounts setup through the K9 mail app. After update I can’t get the same accounts working with the same configuration.

I had no problem getting 2.3.3 installed, and have been pretty happy. However, today I tried to mount the SD card on my computer(s) and failed. I tried Win 7 64-bit, Win 7 32-bit, Mac OS X 10.6, and my Archos 101. With a ll I get the Samsung Kies/Media Player/Mass Storage prompt, but selecting Mass Storage does nothing on the host device. Media Player gives me r/w access to the whole card. Is this to be expected?

    • Reply NeaL Pradeep July 17, 2011 at 1:33 pm

the r/w access can be obtained by default, is it asking any sorts of password?

      • Reply Jonathan Rodgers July 18, 2011 at 10:09 am

No authentication request, Media Player mode seems to provide exactly what I’d expect from Mass Storage, plus the ability to see it as a camera, so it’s not really a complaint – just weird that Mass Storage fails.

      • Reply Jonathan Rodgers July 18, 2011 at 8:52 pm

No request for authentication. I just expected Mass Storage to work like this, and Media Server to be limited to – well – serving media.

this is a network issue and not a firmware issue, kindly check with your operator for the same!

I’m glad I’m not the only one experiencing problems with the call logs. Luckily I have not experienced any problems with call quality. It’s the same before and after my upgrade.

I did also notice that my speakerphone works BETTER than before the upgrade. The audio is less distorted with all sounds.

Have you had success fixing this issue by re-applying the update?

I will attempt it in the next day or so and post my results. Thanks!

Hey guys has anyone else experienced a problem of weak Wi-Fi signal after this update? I used to get full bars of signal on froyo but now only have 1 bar. This happens when i try to log onto othe wifi networks too.

    • Reply lulu July 11, 2011 at 11:23 pm

Although I have noticed that the signal strength indicator shows less “bars”, I have not noticed any degradation in performance.

I of course could tell them that I had upgraded my firmware to Gingerbread. They said that I should try to update my firmware via Samsung Keis and if that doesn’t work that I should request for them to send me a new phone. Problem is that I can’t flash it back to Froyo based on an earlier post that I read. Is there a fix for this problem?

    • Reply Jim July 6, 2011 at 4:39 pm

Levi, what you have to do, just open odin, reconnect your phone with usb cable because the phone is still in recovery mode, if it doesn’t work, pull batterie out, connect cable, put batterie in phone, press and hold volume down button and the power, verify if odin recognize your phone, when add, use only pda and phone, click start. that’s all. good luck

        • Neal Pradeep July 13, 2011 at 9:43 am

since all the versions of fw are the wipe version, its not a compulsion to clear the cache as its automatically done

        • Jimmy July 28, 2011 at 9:54 pm

It’s still in recovery mode, just plug with the USB cable again, hold the POWER buton and the volume down button, notice that your device is added in ODIN, when you see add… just use the PDA and the PHONE only.

  103. Reply JAnusz June 20, 2011 at 6:46 pm

Here are few mthods you can use (from XDA website by Golmar88)

    FIRST METHOD (easiest/most common)

    1) Power phone off
    2) Plug USB into computer
    3) Hold vol up + vol down
    4) Plug USB into phone while still holding the vol up and vol down
    5) Yellow /_\ (triangle, Downloading, Andy shoveling, Do not turn off Target!!! symbol)
    Your now in Download mode

    SECOND METHOD

    1) Power phone off
    2) Plug USB into Computer
    3) Plug microUSB into phone
    4) Hold pwr + vol up + vol down
    5) When Batt icon goes away, release pwr, still holding vol up + vol down
    6) Yellow /_\ (triangle, Downloading, Andy shoveling, Do not turn off Target!!! symbol)
You should now be in Download mode.

    THIRD METHOD

    1) Power phone off
    2) Pull battery out
    3) Hold vol up + vol down
    4) While holding vol up + vol down, plug in USB cable into the phone
    5) While still holding vol up + vol down, put battery back in
    6) Yellow /_\ (triangle, Downloading, Andy shoveling, Do not turn off Target!!! symbol)
You should now be in Download mode.

    FOURTH METHOD (adb)

    1) Enable debugging on your phone (Menu>Settings>Applications>Development>)
    2) With phone on, plug USB into computer and phone
    3) Open cmd
    4) Type in “adb devices” (not totally necessary, but I always do it just to make sure everything is good), making sure it recognizes your device
    5) Type in “adb reboot download”
    6) Yellow /_\ (triangle, Downloading, Andy shoveling, Do not turn off Target!!! symbol)
You should now be in Download mode.

After installing this 2.3.3 GB and playing around I found out that I won’t be able to flash back to original Froyo. Why I would try to do that? Because this GB is not rooted and it can not be at this moment. I need root it because I want to install CWM, Google Video Calls and few other things (unlock) None of these can be done with this Gingerbread flash. There is another GB 2.3.3 version on XDA website and that one is rooted. To late for me. After trying to flash Froyo back I almost bricked my phone. I was able to flash to this 3.2.2 GB. Now I have to live with it. Its good ROM but NOT ROOTED. Any sugestions?

This Gingerbread is not rooted. You have to check XDA site to find their procedure how to root. I have done all the steps and now I have this 2.3.3 rooted. Checked with terminal. Confirmed.I have access to root. Thanks to this I was also able to modify Google Talk so now it has Video Chat enabled. Then I was able to Install newest Netlix. Runs like charm. I have included link to XDA in my previous post but this site didn’t let it go through.

          Listen,
1- just following the rule, open ODIN, shut down your device, plug with USB Cable to your PC, use two buttons: POWER and VOLUME DOWN button, wait about 5s two times, release the PWER Button and still keep the VOLUME DOWN Button, when you see the yellow triangle, wait for ADD to ODIN,
2- for the root, download the link : ZImage.root and follow the instruction…

I guess I will just have to wait for you to come up with a way to root this now firmware version. I tried using a program called “Gingerbreak” that claim to be able to root any phone running Gingerbread. It failed to root my phone. Further google searches lead me to your page. Please let me know as soon as you have figured out how to root this new firmware build.
