Please note that if you have rooted your device earlier then the root access gets revoked, so after updating the device you will have to again root the device so that you can enjoy the rooted Xperia Arc.

Procedure to update Xperia Arc with Gingerbread 2.3.3:

  • After getting the bootloader unlocked, you will have to now download the Gingerbread ROMs as per your choice which are mentioned below. Depending upon the location, operator and choice you can select any one ROM of your choice for downloading it before proceeding to the next step which are shown below,

Global Version
Hong Kong Version
Native Docomo Version
Unrooted Hong Kong Version (Recommended)
Unrooted O2 Version

  • After downloading you will have to setup the Android SDK and then you will have to extract the file which is named as android-sdk_r10-windows.zip to C:\ after which you will have to extract the system.zip file to the path C:\android-sdk-windows\tools and you will get the SYSTEMFILE.img file. Please note that the file name here will be different.
  • Now, after doing this you will have to unplug the USB cable and simply power off the phone and then unplug the USB cable and power off the phone.
  • Now, you will have to press the “Menu” key from your phone and then you need to plug in the USB cable after which you will see that a Blue notification light will be glowing.

Menu Key Arc

  • After this, just go to the Start menu and click on the Run option and just type in the cmd and then press Enter key from your keyboard as shown in the below screen shot.

cmd

  • Up next you will have to type in the command in the command prompt as,

Cd\android-sdk-windows\tools
Fastboot devices

after which you will have to type in the enter key from the keyboard.

  • Now, if you have got XXXXXXXXXXXX fastboot that means your phone successfully connected and if not then you just will have to whole process which is mentioned above again and if its succeeded you will get to see the screen as shown below,

Fastboot

Now after getting the above screen, it means that you can now flash the system image to your phone by keying in the command below,

fastboot flash system SYSTEMFILE.img

Now, after keying in the command which is shown above, you will see that after a time of few minutes you will have to change the SYSTEMFILE.img to the file which you have extracted as shown in the below screenshot.

Flash Operation completed

So, that’s it you have now successfully installed the latest firmware of 2.3.3, you will have to pull off the phone from the computer which is connected with the USB and then all you need to do is to just switch ON the device. Please note that the phone will take up to 10 minutes in booting the phone as this is the first start of the device as the firmware update will initiate the process of starting the device in the normal mode and also it applies all the critical updates which happened in the firmware update process.

If just in any case you are unable to complete the whole process and due to some reasons if you failed to upgrade the device then don’t panic and instead just re follow the whole procedure from the start to facilitate the smoother firmware updation process. Heyy first you say “Kindly note that by doing this process you will not be voiding the warranty”
Yet you say you have to root the device first which will void the warrenty anyway.

Then you say “and also if you have earlier rooted your Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc before then after the firmware update the root access will be revoked and then again you will have to root the device”

I thought rooting was permanent and couldn’t be unrooted or am I getting you wrong

Hmmm – surely it is simpler to just use Sony Ericsson Update Service or there PC Companion. You should make it clear that you do not have to unlock the bootloader in your article, and that there are consequences to doing this.
