Cyanogen Mod Logo

Update: This process is not recommended for the users anymore as users are facing issues after applying this update! We will again come back with the article as soon as a new stable version of Cyanogen MOD arrives!

For all Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 users who were asking for the Cyanogen Mod ROM, here it is as in the due course of the article we will see on how you can install the latest version of Gingerbread 2.3.7 version. This update is basically a custom ROM and not the official or leaked Stock / Default ROM. You need to be very careful as in you need to follow all the instructions very carefully while applying this update or else there is a high probability that you may even brick your phone. We have tried our level best to make this article crisp and short in order to facilitate the faster and speedier update process.

Over a period of this article we will see on what are the list of –

Pre Requisites,

Enhancements in Cyanogen MOD ROM for Galaxy ACE,

Procedure to update Galaxy ACE S5830 with Gingerbread 2.3.7 Cyanogen MOD Release

Note: Please note that this Cyanogen Mod release if the un official release and still the Official Cyanogen MOD ROM is not yet released, so ensure that you are flashing at your own rick.

Disclaimer: We should not be held responsible in any manner just in case if anything happens to your device which is a very unlikely case if you follow the instructions which are mentioned in the due course of the article.

This update is not the Official update which is released by the Samsung Electronics Ltd. and is the custom ROM which is released by the third party developer. Also, in the process of applying this custom ROM, you will have to root the phone and after which you will be losing the warranty which can be claimed only when you update with any of the Stock releases like DDKQ6 or XWKS2 Update which we have seen earlier. Soon, a modified version of Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 version will be arriving for the Galaxy ACE S5830 phone which too will be covered here.

Enhancements in the Cyanogen MOD ROM:

  • Camera issue has been fixed in this firmware of Cyanogen,
  • Gingerbread 2.3.7 AOSP Build,
  • Video Playback has been fixed,
  • Headset Button is now fully working,
  • FM Radio Works better than ever,
  • Fixed Built number GWK74,
  • Setup Wizard Fixed,
  • Super user application now comes updated by default,
  • New kernel based on Ketut,
  • Camera Orientation bug has been fixed,
  • Compass works perfectly,
  • Battery too has been optimized so as to give higher battery life and also the Internet browser is now faster than ever
  • Also there are many performance fixes which have been worked around to give better user experience with new fresh User interface

Pre Requisites:

  • Charge your device to a minimum of 90% as since the procedure is bit lengthy, the phone will consume more battery than the normal usage. Lesser battery will lead to the turning Off of the device in the middle of the firmware update process.
  • Back up all your data which is there in the phone memory, as in an unlikely event if the data gets lost then you can easily restore the backup. With the help of tips which are given below you can easily create the backup.

Notes – Backup in the mail so that you can then restore manually
Text messages – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Phone Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Call Log - Call Log and Restore
Pictures, Music, Videos, Files etc.– Copy to internal / External SD Card,
Internet & MMS Settings – Backup all the settings from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names”.

  • Up next is you need to ensure that the USB Debugging is enabled in your phone. The USB Debugging can be enabled from the path of Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging. Apart from this you also need to ensure that your computer has ADMIN privileges and USB Read / Write Access. It’s not recommended to use computers which have limited access.

Special Instructions to users on Custom ROM:
Just in case if you are any of the custom ROMs then you need turn Off your phone so that you can then enter into the recovery mode. The recovery mode can be entered by pressing Volume UP Key + Middle button, and holding both simultaneously press the Power Button. You can also refer to an interactive video to know more on how you can enter the same in the recovery mode. If the device boots normally then you need to again try to enter the same.

In the recovery mode, select the options like Wipe data/factory reset, Wipe Cache partition and then select reboot system now to reboot the phone. You can select the options using the Volume keys and can select the appropriate option by pressing the Power button. This basically clears off all the cache data which is there in the phone so that the room can be made to accommodate this all new custom ROM firmwares. Just in case if any of the other tools like the Voodoo etc. are installed, if yes then then you need to disable the same.

So let’s head to the procedure which is mentioned in the next page.

Great posting!! I’m gonna try this one out. I have one question: I’m using the xxkph android 2.3.4 version. Do I have to install the DDKQ5 android 2.3.4 or can I just skip that part of the installation.

I rooted my ace and installed ROM Manager. but while i am selecting “Flash Clock Work Mod Recovery” option, its asking me to confirm the phone model ….but unfortunately there is no samsung galaxy ace listed. no samsung phone models at all. its showing only dell streak, huawei and some other models…. I already copied “recovery-clockwork-5.0.2.6-galaxyace-fix.zip” to my sd card…..plz help me

  11. Jagdish says:

    Hey NEAL,

Great news, finally you have released the long awaited CM7 ROM.

Please note that earlier I tried GingerReal released by you and had lot of problems and then, as per your advise, I had flashed with DDKQ5 & finally with DDKQ6. After that, I came to know from one of my friend @ FirstUA Custom ROM and flashed my phone with FirstUA ROM. Presently, i am on FirstUA ROM V-1.2 (Android version 2.3.4, Baseband version XXKPH and Kernel version 2.6.35.7-perf-CL375596 ketut@ketut-lenovo #1).

In view of the above, I need to know the following before trying this release :

    1) Whether I have to go back to DDKQ5 or NO NEED (I am on XXKPH) ?
    2) If no need to go back to DDKQ5 the, rooting is not required as my phone is already rooted and I can directly apply this update CORRECT ? Only thing is I have to download ROM Manager application to follow your instructions.
    3) Is this ROM is better then FirstUA ROM ?
    4) Can I shift all my APK to SD card to keep more internal memory free ?

Kindly reply in detail so that I would not face any problem while applying this release.

Thanks in advance and sorry for writting too much.

  38. Zubin says:

    Hey NeaL,

2 feedbacks after using it for almost a week:

1.I pause a song while listening music on headphones by pressing the answer button of headphones. However, when I press it again in CM7 it becomes robotic and the phone HANGS (FREEZES). The only way out is to remove battery and switch on again.

    2. The default alarm tones are very annoying and there is no way to customize it.

Just a general feedback which you can probably forward the developers. Otherwise, this is 1000% times better than stock roms.

The feedback is to make the CM7 experience even better.

    Cheers,

    Zubin

  39. vjeko says:

not god freezis all the time you cant put the message center nmb.everything is on default and you cant change anything going back to froyo because the ginger is not so god at all

Somehow, I am not satisfied with the camera picture quality, not as clear as of stock camera. Can you please advise from where I can get the Stock Camera APK file or the ZIP file of Galaxy Ace so that I can install APK file directly OR extracting the ZIP file and replacing the existing camera files by making use of Root Explorer ?

    Please advise urgently.
In case, you do not have the Stock Camera file of Galaxy Ace in that case give me the link so that I can take further action.

And eventually i've chosen it to random phone, and then reboot then…. my phone won't start ON. Won't go download mode, just cannot do anything. Except when i plugged in the phone to the COMPUTER and i HOLD volumeup+home+power it was detected but still nothing happened on the phone screen. TOTAL BLACK OUT!

    (Link Removed by moderator)

Hi neal , i think you must delete Step 2: Clock Work MOD Installation from your instructions ,because it’s doesn’t need.

its very unfortunate to hear that but motherboard replacement is nothing to do with the update as both are independent things, the firmware only affects ROM and not any other part! I hope you know what we are talking of!

    Hello,
I see that u are suggesting to install cwm with rom manager which isn’t compatible with galaxy ace and u have a plenty of chances to brick ur phone with this application.

  98. Dimah says:

Once it’s bricked with rom manager u cant recover it by ur self … i had this issue when miss selected the wrong phone on the rom manager list, ther’s no warning or confirmation once u select it the install is started and when u reboot ur phone its the black out QQ

Hello Neal. I have this ROM installed since a while back. I have been experiencing a problem that no-one has so far helped me resolve, so I am hoping you will be able to ;) . Basically, I have been using Link2SD, in order to gain much needed space on the phone. Once I link my apps, I gain huge amounts of space. Then the problem is that once I have finished installing and linking my apps, once I reboot, although the EXT4 partition is still visible, and therefore mounted, the apps are no longer visible!!! This has happened several times, and the last time I tried, it was with a brand new Samsung 16GB micro SD card….the same happened again. Apps2SD does not work in the same way, and certainly does not provide as much free space as Link2SD. Please help me, as I am tearing my hair out at this point, and I am sure it must have something to do with the ROM, as it worked fine on the stock ROM when I tried it, although at the time I only had a 2GB micro SD card.
The other thing which I really fail to understand is that I actually made a CWM complete backup before my apps disappeared, yet when I tried to restore the backup, the linked files showed as 0 in Link2SD!
Thanks, and my apologies if this question does not directly apply to the context of this forum ;) . David
