Cyanogen Mod Logo

Update: This process is not recommended for the users anymore as users are facing issues after applying this update! We will again come back with the article as soon as a new stable version of Cyanogen MOD arrives!

For all Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 users who were asking for the Cyanogen Mod ROM, here it is as in the due course of the article we will see on how you can install the latest version of Gingerbread 2.3.7 version. This update is basically a custom ROM and not the official or leaked Stock / Default ROM. You need to be very careful as in you need to follow all the instructions very carefully while applying this update or else there is a high probability that you may even brick your phone. We have tried our level best to make this article crisp and short in order to facilitate the faster and speedier update process.

Over a period of this article we will see on what are the list of –

Pre Requisites,

Enhancements in Cyanogen MOD ROM for Galaxy ACE,

Procedure to update Galaxy ACE S5830 with Gingerbread 2.3.7 Cyanogen MOD Release

Note: Please note that this Cyanogen Mod release if the un official release and still the Official Cyanogen MOD ROM is not yet released, so ensure that you are flashing at your own rick.

Disclaimer: We should not be held responsible in any manner just in case if anything happens to your device which is a very unlikely case if you follow the instructions which are mentioned in the due course of the article.

This update is not the Official update which is released by the Samsung Electronics Ltd. and is the custom ROM which is released by the third party developer. Also, in the process of applying this custom ROM, you will have to root the phone and after which you will be losing the warranty which can be claimed only when you update with any of the Stock releases like DDKQ6 or XWKS2 Update which we have seen earlier. Soon, a modified version of Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 version will be arriving for the Galaxy ACE S5830 phone which too will be covered here.

Enhancements in the Cyanogen MOD ROM:

  • Camera issue has been fixed in this firmware of Cyanogen,
  • Gingerbread 2.3.7 AOSP Build,
  • Video Playback has been fixed,
  • Headset Button is now fully working,
  • FM Radio Works better than ever,
  • Fixed Built number GWK74,
  • Setup Wizard Fixed,
  • Super user application now comes updated by default,
  • New kernel based on Ketut,
  • Camera Orientation bug has been fixed,
  • Compass works perfectly,
  • Battery too has been optimized so as to give higher battery life and also the Internet browser is now faster than ever
  • Also there are many performance fixes which have been worked around to give better user experience with new fresh User interface

Pre Requisites:

  • Charge your device to a minimum of 90% as since the procedure is bit lengthy, the phone will consume more battery than the normal usage. Lesser battery will lead to the turning Off of the device in the middle of the firmware update process.
  • Back up all your data which is there in the phone memory, as in an unlikely event if the data gets lost then you can easily restore the backup. With the help of tips which are given below you can easily create the backup.

Notes – Backup in the mail so that you can then restore manually
Text messages – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Phone Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Call Log - Call Log and Restore
Pictures, Music, Videos, Files etc.– Copy to internal / External SD Card,
Internet & MMS Settings – Backup all the settings from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names”.

  • Up next is you need to ensure that the USB Debugging is enabled in your phone. The USB Debugging can be enabled from the path of Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging. Apart from this you also need to ensure that your computer has ADMIN privileges and USB Read / Write Access. It’s not recommended to use computers which have limited access.

Special Instructions to users on Custom ROM:
Just in case if you are any of the custom ROMs then you need turn Off your phone so that you can then enter into the recovery mode. The recovery mode can be entered by pressing Volume UP Key + Middle button, and holding both simultaneously press the Power Button. You can also refer to an interactive video to know more on how you can enter the same in the recovery mode. If the device boots normally then you need to again try to enter the same.

In the recovery mode, select the options like Wipe data/factory reset, Wipe Cache partition and then select reboot system now to reboot the phone. You can select the options using the Volume keys and can select the appropriate option by pressing the Power button. This basically clears off all the cache data which is there in the phone so that the room can be made to accommodate this all new custom ROM firmwares. Just in case if any of the other tools like the Voodoo etc. are installed, if yes then then you need to disable the same.

So let’s head to the procedure which is mentioned in the next page.

Hello Neal. I have this ROM installed since a while back. I have been experiencing a problem that no-one has so far helped me resolve, so I am hoping you will be able to ;). Basically, I have been using Link2SD, in order to gain much needed space on the phone. Once I link my apps, I gain huge amounts of space. Then the problem is that once I have finished installing and linking my apps, once I reboot, although the EXT4 partition is still visible, and therefore mounted, the apps are no longer visible!!! This has happened several times, and the last time I tried, it was with a brand new Samsung 16GB micro SD card….the same happened again. Apps2SD does not work in the same way, and certainly does not provide as much free space as Link2SD. Please help me, as I am tearing my hair out at this point, and I am sure it must have something to do with the ROM, as it worked fine on the stock ROM when I tried it, although at the time I only had a 2GB micro SD card.
The other thing which I really fail to understand is that I actually made a CWM complete backup before my apps disappeared, yet when I tried to restore the backup, the linked files showed as 0 in Link2SD!
Thanks, and my apologies if this question does not directly apply to the context of this forum ;). David

I am from Canada and my carrier is Koodo, they dont have that firmware. i managed to restore a backup with cwm. the backup is my rooted stock rom. There is still no network connection. I want to return my phone for a new one that works but I can’t if my phone is rooted and has cwm. The unroot zips aren’t working for me because I have cwm and it wont let me update from sd. I can’t figure out how to get rid of cwm. I can’t flash a stock rom because there aren;t any for me on the internet. All I have is my backup with cwm.

    How to update?
I’ve bricked my phone too, same as many people in the ROM manage step, my phone will not turn on, no screen, always black screen. I’ve tried Jig cable and nothing happen. No download mode.
The computer recongnize the phone only if I press and hold Vol up button+Home button+pw button, then I open Odin and the COM section turn yellow, then I load the package for DDKQ6 and start, show the below message and do not go ahead. Now more than 20min has been and Odin does not finish!
    Download Start…
    Create File…

    setup connection…

I’ve read many internet post and they said that the phone is dead, that I need to exchange my motherboard…I will not believe that, what the ROM Manage can do to hard brick the phone?

Please help me….I bought it with no warrant and I have no money to purchase other.

Ooh damn .. I run Rom manager and back up , my ace become dead phone (it’s Bricked……it can’t be charge and flashing in download mode) ,, i’m little confused now,, I’m searching google , and get the solution to fix this problem. You must unbrick your device using RIFF BOX ,
    (Link Removed by moderator)

Hi neal , i think you must delete Step 2: Clock Work MOD Installation from your instructions ,because it’s doesn’t need.

you can entering the recovery mode without ROM manager and you choose the zip file form sdcard.

    Sorry for my bad english,,

“After this from the list of options, you need to first up select the option of “Flash Clock Work Mod Recovery” which will flash the recovery mode in your phone.” <—– Can't find Samsung GALAXY ACE on the phone type list?!

And eventually i've chosen it to random phone, and then reboot then…. my phone won't start ON. Won't go download mode, just cannot do anything. Except when i plugged in the phone to the COMPUTER and i HOLD volumeup+home+power it was detected but still nothing happened on the phone screen. TOTAL BLACK OUT!

Which means, i've been googling around for 8 hours (from 11pm to 6am)!! To find any solution to fix this problem, so what i get is my that my ACE got a really HARD BRICKED! *barf

Can you please advise from where I can get the Stock Camera APK file or the ZIP file of Galaxy Ace so that I can install APK file directly OR extracting the ZIP file and replacing the existing camera files by making use of Root Explorer ?

    Please advise urgently.

my phone bricked after flashing CWM from ROM manager and I have chosen the wrong phone since i couldn’t find ace i choose something like \geek one\ i Shut down the phone and wanted to go to recovery mode and the phone isn’t turning on.It IS Bricked…… I tried getting into download mode through putting through putting the battery while pressing down volume and power button with the ok button. ..yet nothing black screen no download mode.. Odin is detecting the phone and showing a yellow bar yet it stops on setup connection and stays like that indefinitely ……..Dunno what to do….the guide above some how doesn’t even mention that you need to find your device specifically in ROM manger

\After this from the list of options, you need to first up select the option of “Flash Clock Work Mod Recovery” which will flash the recovery mode in your phone.\….bricked on this step….
    any help is appreciated

    Hey NeaL,

2 feedbacks after using it for almost a week:

1.I pause a song while listening music on headphones by pressing the answer button of headphones. However, when I press it again in CM7 it becomes robotic and the phone HANGS (FREEZES). The only way out is to remove battery and switch on again.

    2. The default alarm tones are very annoying and there is no way to customize it.

Just a general feedback which you can probably forward the developers. Otherwise, this is 1000% times better than stock roms.

The feedback is to make the CM7 experience even better.

    Cheers,

    Zubin

    Hey NEAL,

Great news, finally you have released the long awaited CM7 ROM.

Please note that earlier I tried GingerReal released by you and had lot of problems and then, as per your advise, I had flashed with DDKQ5 & finally with DDKQ6. After that, I came to know from one of my friend @ FirstUA Custom ROM and flashed my phone with FirstUA ROM. Presently, i am on FirstUA ROM V-1.2 (Android version 2.3.4, Baseband version XXKPH and Kernel version 2.6.35.7-perf-CL375596 ketut@ketut-lenovo #1).

In view of the above, I need to know the following before trying this release :

    1) Whether I have to go back to DDKQ5 or NO NEED (I am on XXKPH) ?
    2) If no need to go back to DDKQ5 the, rooting is not required as my phone is already rooted and I can directly apply this update CORRECT ? Only thing is I have to download ROM Manager application to follow your instructions.
    3) Is this ROM is better then FirstUA ROM ?
    4) Can I shift all my APK to SD card to keep more internal memory free ?

Kindly reply in detail so that I would not face any problem while applying this release.

Thanks in advance and sorry for writting too much.

    • Reply NeaL Pradeep November 10, 2011 at 9:49 am

yes, you need to go to ddkq5,

Request you not to use “Backup Current Rom”. It will make your Galaxy Ace dead.

    • Reply zul November 10, 2011 at 12:41 pm

is it? mine already dead… can it be rocover bro?

      • Reply NeaL Pradeep November 10, 2011 at 1:11 pm

have you taken the backup of your earlier firmware as mentioned in the article? If not then you can apply with the update of DDKQ6 DDKQ5

Great posting!! I’m gonna try this one out. I have one question: I’m using the xxkph android 2.3.4 version. Do I have to install the DDKQ5 android 2.3.4 or can I just skip that part of the installation.

    Dear Neal,

I think I’ve bricked the phone. All sudden the phone black out during backup current rom. Is there any chances I’ll recover the phone. It can’t boot or what so ever. Please help!!!1

    • Reply NeaL Pradeep November 10, 2011 at 9:53 am

where have you done it wrong?

      • Reply zul November 10, 2011 at 12:39 pm

I’ve successfully rooted. Then I’ve installed the ROM manager from the market. Then I flashed the clock mod recovery and still ok. Later I backup the the current rom, when it asked for the file name for the backup, I pressed the middle button, all at sudden it black out. It can’t be booted or on the phone. Is it bricked???

        • LIJO November 13, 2011 at 9:38 am

yup its bricked. go to service center and tell its not working after fw update. and Neal post dont use rom manager instead use clock work mod to back up rom.

The Galaxy Ace S5830 comes in three flavors: S5830, S5830L & S5830B (frequency differences), will the Cyanogen MOD 7.1 Gingerbread 2.3.7 Firmware work on ALL models? Appreciate any input. Thanks much!!

    • Reply NeaL Pradeep November 10, 2011 at 9:53 am

no, it will only work on S5830 Model as its a n/w lock free device!

  114. Reply Pradeep Kumar Aitha November 9, 2011 at 3:58 pm

so u mean wifi is working ok?

        • NeaL Pradeep November 10, 2011 at 11:45 am

for some users there is an issue!

    • Reply Nathan November 25, 2011 at 9:55 pm

CyanogenMod is not made by KANG. KANG is a unofficial build of CyanogenMod. In the next few weeks a inside source from the CyanogenMod team told me that an official build is on the way. They might hold on until ICS is released.
