    September 16, 2011 at 11:11 pm

    Hi Neal,

The only thing that bothers me is that if i plug the usb cable, it will prompt a window Select USB Mode with 3 selections which are Samsung Kies , Media Player, Mass Storage then i will select Samsung Kies. After selecting the Samsung Kies my phone screen will go back to home screen but it doesn’t show any devices connected to my computer. If im going to select the Mass Storage , the device/phone could be recognised as a drive. It seems the cable has nothing to do with it. Im doing these process while the Kies program is open on my computer.

Re-installaling the driver from Kies Tools menu, updating Kies latest updates, restarting the PC and my Phone doesn’t work either.

What would be your next advice?

    Hi Neal,

I’ve got my new SGS i9000 2 months ago and i came accross with your blog and i find it very helpful for a newbie like me.
Your forum earns good popularity not only because of the current trend of mobilephones but rather of how you accomodate your visitors. Congratulations!
In my case, my sgs firmware ver currently is Froyo 2.2 jpjpf and sometimes i notice that if i have an open applications it freeze. Could it be possible to upgrade my current ver to Gingerbread XXJVR 2.3.4 Firmware ? Will it solve frequent freezing?
And my Kies application does not recognise my phone. I have done all the work around but no luck.

    SOS Please.

    Thank you in advance

    Hi NeaL

I successfully flashed my device, wipe data and clear the cache but all those files from old apk are still in the sd card. How can remove them.

    thanks

    • NeaL Pradeep

      September 12, 2011 at 10:27 am

which apps you wish to remove!

      • atferraz

        September 13, 2011 at 3:43 am

        Thanks for the reply.
All that does not belong to the new System (2.3.4).
You see, my SD card is full of folders and apks that are not installed (75%), so I assume that belong to apps from the previous system (2.3.3).
Thus which ones are the new system and which ones are to delete?
Shouldn’t the wipe data and clear the cache commands, have removed those old apps and folder files?

        • NeaL Pradeep

          September 16, 2011 at 6:32 pm

you can delete system apps only after rooting!

Just to mention a little tip for people having trouble getting into Recovery Mode: It is VERY important you hold all three buttons (volume UP, home, power) UNTIL the Galaxy logo is displayed. At that moment, release the power button and JUST the power button. Keep holding Volume UP and Home until you see the recovery mode being started.
    100% success every time.

Hello, I need an advice … right now I’m running on 2.3.4 xxjvp, and I want to upgrade to xxjvr… I downloaded the files from the link provided, but I didn’t receive the files like they are shown on the picture in the instruction. Everything else is ok, except that I have received the CSC file as a RAR archive. By the way, the size of the files is the same as the one shown on the picture above in the instruction. will there be any problem if I start with the update, or maybe it’s just because when I have installed winrar, I have ticked the box to associate winrar with .tar files?? thank you in advance… best regards.. Hi Neal
There’s a doubt abt repartition box. If ODIN automatically ticks it on selecting pit file(as it does in the video uploaded), do we have to untick it manually or let the way it is. bcoz in instructions nothing is mentioned regarding this.

    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the ever excellent instructions Pradeep. I have been facing a problem ever since i updated to XXJVP, the phone is stable and fast, but my 3g data connection is extremely slow, in fact slower than EDGE on the same device. I have tried reverting back to the stock rom 2.3.3, changed the modems only, yet this problem persists. Do you have any ideas on what the issue could be, and its resolution?

    August 23, 2011 at 7:50 am

    Hi Pradeep

I had installed 2.3.3 XXJVO earlier and I used to get minimum 24 hrs of backup for my usage. I sync 4 email clients (every hour) and talk about 1 hr per day. WiFi and GPS are always on when I used this version.

But after installing 2.3.4 XXJVR now battery backup has gone for a toss. With the same usage as stated above and only having WiFi switched on (GPS is off), the max battery back up I get is 10-12 hours. Not sure where it has gone wrong. Can you pls guide me thru’ this ? Also my quadrant score for this device is just 1349. Pls let me know what is the issue here and how it can get corrected ?

    • Karthik

      August 31, 2011 at 9:45 pm

      Hi Pradeep

Any guesses for having the issue I reported ? The battery drain still continues and I am planning to go back to 2.3.3 if possbile. Also a weird problem occured to me 2 days ago, the phone hung while I was trying to operate a program. Then I removed the battery and restarted the phone. To my surprise all the messages were lost and I had to restore 1 month old back up of messages.

      Regards

    Hello,

I have samsung galaxy S GT-I9000. it has firmware 2.1 update 1. Baseband version is I9000JXg2. i have recently updated my kies and found that i can upgrade firmware to gingerbread. I have been trying to do it but no luck. most of the times it gets disconnected, sometimes it says battery of my phone is too low (though it is 99 or 100%), sometimes it says insufficient free disk space, required 3000MB. Phone has three different memories External SD (8GB), Internal SD (6GB) and Internal phone storage (1.84GB available). So i am unable to upgrade firmware. any suggestions how to go about it??

    Many Thanks

I’m confused: Which Odin version should I use? 1.0 or 1.82? In the video you’re using 1.82 even though you open the same page and you have the red text there telling you to use 1.0.

Hi, I have a Samsung I9000 that I upgraded to Gingerbread XXJVP through your tutorial. While upgrading to XXJVP your tutorial asks for selecting the “repartition” box in Odin and everything was successful. However, in XXJVR tutorial there is no mention of selecting the “repartition” or not. What is the difference between selecting the repartition or otherwise.

I have read in the posts not to select repartition while upgrading but can you please tell me for sure what to do. I am just being cautious in trying to avoid bricking my device.

    Hi Neal,

In your introduction you say this upgrade is for Samsung S GT I9000 but not for anything similar. Im confused. My phone is indeed the GT I9000 but it is also dubbed the Samsung Vibrant. got it from Bell (canada) .

I did you previoius upgrades which it is currently running XXJVP

So should I not be doing this update? Why do you say do not use on the vibrant?

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 10, 2011 at 11:47 pm

the Galaxy Vibrant is having model number as I9000M and not just i9000. This update is not for Vibrant and is for Galaxy S GT I9000

      • Hightower

        August 11, 2011 at 1:30 am

Interesting . I bought it as a Vibrant but the model number stated in “about phone” says GT I9000 There is no M

          August 11, 2011 at 2:03 am

Further to this comment, I checked system information utilities and benchmarks and they all indicate I9000 not I9000M even though it was sold as a Vibrant. I assume I am safe to upgrade the firmware then?

          • NeaL Pradeep

            August 11, 2011 at 10:21 am

why take a risk as this may lock the phone!

        • Hightower

          August 11, 2011 at 1:49 pm

Yes you have a point there. But this battery drain is driving me nuts.
The reason why I was asking was because I followed your procedures for the two previous upgrades not noticing your warning about not doing the vibrant. The phone functions fine with your previous upgrades other than some lag and the battery drain. What do you mean by locking the phone. AKA Brick?? If it does that is there a recovery?

          • NeaL Pradeep

            August 11, 2011 at 5:25 pm

yes there is a recovery mode!

I have not seen any postings for updating the Galaxy S I9000M (Vibrant from Bell Canada) to Gingerbread. I don’t want to brick my phone. Have you come up with a way to do this yet?

    Neal,

One other thing. i flashed all that you said and almost everything went well.

I had to set up my operators APN settings which is fine but everytime i connect to the internet i get an error message saying ‘could not connect to the internet. please check network settings’ even though it IS acutally connected to the internet.

Is this due to the incorrect CSC code or because of something else?

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 8, 2011 at 3:05 pm

APN Settings are not correctly entered!!! have you flashed asuccessfully?

        Hi Neal,

I’ve flashed correctly and everything else is perfect bar the internet settings as described above.

I triple checked the APN settings and they are what they should be.

I flashed back to 2.3.3 and its working fine again. Is there soimething I’m missing as the flash went fine?

    hi neal,

thanks a lot for your frequent updates and kind replies, i feel that this Rom (xxjvr) is a lot better than the previous ones, it’s smoother, no force closes till now(nothing even after ending phone calls like some said above) and its still good without voodoo(ext 4 file system), i haven’t experienced any BIG improvement on battery consumption over the previous Roms so far, only noticeable bug is the battery widget is not showing 100% charge immediately after disconnecting from charger but that has been here in all the previous roms.
i’ve been feeling improvement on all your updates so far and its really not explainable what they are individually,..
it was really very helpful with your clean instructions and fast replies too, thanks again,.. keep it up,…

will flashing a voodoo make the device more faster?
if so PLEASE come up with a voodoo lagfix very soon, this is my only request..!!

    thanks a lot again….

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 18, 2011 at 5:11 pm

Yes prabhaher it makes device faster as it converts existing file system of rfs to ext4.

    According to my observation..

    1) XXJVO : Quadrant score-997, Battery life good, Very much stable

    2) XXJVQ: Quadrant score 1350, Battery life less than XXJVQ, Force close after phone call.

    2) XXJVR: Quadrant score 1350, Battery life increase compared to XXJVQ and almost same as XXJVO, Force close after phone call still exist.

Currently after trying all 3 i am using XXJVO since its very much stable and no problem at all since i have to make many calls.

Will wait for official ROM release.

you need to clear the cache from the recovery mode, you have not cleared the cache and which is why the reason you are facing force close errors!

    Hi Neal
As usual, you have provided us with clear and candid instructions on how go about this upgrade to XXJVR. Anyone following the instructions should not experience any difficulties. My own upgrade was a breeze and flawless, however you forgot to mention that a password is required to unzip the files you provided. Having been here for a while, I used androidadvices.com and it worked but for a new person this could present a challenge. Though I am just into this XXJVR for 15 hours or so, I have honestly not experienced any improvement on battery consumption over XXJVQ under the same parameters; time will tell

hi, i wanted to ask how can i improve the performance for my i9000?
I saw a lot of videos demonstrating apps using their i9000 which run smoothly but my i9000 can’t..
Issue such as setting up live wallpaper in my i9000 will makes my i9000 homescreen lag..
but I notice that other i9000 users won’t experience this kind of lag~
somehow, I felt that my i9000 is slow compare to others..
is there any methods to improve my i9000 performance??

    • NeaL Pradeep

      August 2, 2011 at 11:14 am
