Sony has announced that it has released the Android M Developer Preview for some of its Xperia devices, and for developers who are enrolled in its Open Device program.
The developer preview gives devs the necessary tools to test and verify apps on the new Android M release, which includes a new permission system. If you want to get started and download the software binaries then hit the source link below. You can only run it on devices where the bootloader is unlocked and the software is not for daily use (the modem and camera aren’t implemented).
The list of supported devices includes the Xperia Z3, Xperia Z3 Compact, Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact, Xperia Z2, Xperia Z2 Tablet, Xperia Z1 Compact, Xperia Z1, Xperia Z Ultra, Xperia E3, Xperia M2, Xperia T2 Ultra and Xperia T3. The Android M flashing process is pretty simple. All of the necessary instructions and files are available on Sony’s website and through the company’s easy-to-follow guide.
Google has announced the developer preview release of the next version of Android at its I/O developer conference in San Francisco, last month. With Android M, Google focuses mostly on fit and finish, but the company also added a number of new features to its mobile operating system. The preview release includes updated SDKs, system images for testing on the Android emulator and the Nexus 5, Nexus 6, Nexus 9 and the Nexus player. Google said that it has fixed “thousands of bugs” in this release and that it will provide updated preview system images regularly during the preview program.
