Huawei Honor 4X Hands-on & First Impressions

Huawei has been in the Indian market for more than Xiaomi and has made a quite an impact over the year. But it peaked customers interests towards its devices from last year only, as they offered good overall package. With devices in every range and pricing, company has managed to woo the customers with its aggressive priced smartphones providing heavy specs within the price range. But After introducing the Honor 6 Plus today in an event in New Delhi, we kind of disappointed by the pricing of Honor 6 Plus, which is INR 26,499, while we were hoping that it wouldn’t have the case with Honor 4X. But unfortunately it is also priced little higher than its competition, at INR 10,499. Now let’s see if this price point and the specs it comes would allow it to perish among the likes of Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G and Yu Yureka.

Design

For a smartphone that is priced around INR 10K, the Honor 4x wouldn’t make you feel premium when you hold the device, but it does gets closer to what a 10K smartphone can offer and should offer. The top layer of the device is black while you would have a choice to get white or either black color back panel. The Lollipop-inspired capacitive buttons look good, but since it doesn’t have Android Kitkat OS yet, it is deceptive. At top front, you can see the earpiece, 5MP front snapper, sensors, as well as notification LEDs. While at the bottom edge, company have placed the microUSB port, primary microphone, and a familiar speaker grill, whereas at the top you can find 3.5mm audio jack and the secondary microphone.

Hardware

The Honor 4X features a 5.5-inch 720p resolution, which is similar to what can be seen in the competition range – the Xiaomi Redmi Note and Yu Yureka. Though, Honor 4X is behind in chipset performance when compared with Yureka, which got Snapdragon 615. Although, both of these devices are 64-bit, which clocks at 1.7 GHz compared to Snapdragon 410, which clocks at 1.2 GHz. It was a usual choice of processor for Huawei, which usually goes with its in-house processor, the HiSilicon Krinin. The reason behind that may be, the popularity of the 64-bit LTE enabled chipset in India, as they support Indian 4G LTE bands. The chipset is accompanied by 2GB of RAM and Adreno 306 GPU.

There’s an 8GB of internal storage, which is not on par with some competition, although, it should not be a deal breaker as it supports the expansion of storage via microSD up to 32GB. While talking about the camera, it sports a 13MP rear shooter with LED flash and a 5MP front shooter. All this is powered by a massive 3000mAh, which according to the company should give about 72 hours of battery life on an average usage. We will test those claims soon, and get back to you with details in the full review.

Software

The Honor 4X runs Android 4.4 Kitkat OS, which is not the latest Android out there in the market, but the company promises that they would be updating the OS very soon to the Android Lollipop. The OS is custom design by Huawei and is named Emotion UI 3.0, the version which first saw the day of light on Honor 6, its predecessor. You can access few quick settings just swiping up from the lock screen, just like in iOS 8.

Themes are very popular among the Chinese smartphone brands, and looks like Huawei is not much different from them. They provide tons of theme options, for each theme; there will be a different screen lock style, home screen wallpaper and the matching icons and fonts packs. The Magazine style unlock feature on Honor 6 is also available on 4X, every time you unlock the screen the wallpaper changes. Overall, it has all the elements of being a clean and fast interface.

Initial Thoughts

The Huawei Honor 4X is not exactly a game changer like we have been expecting from the company, but it does fall into an undefined category, between budget and mid-range smartphones. So, it would be a tough head-to-head battle between the contenders like Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G and the Yu Yureka. The specification of the Honor 4X are clearly worthy of the pricing, but should you spend on Redmi Note 4G, Yuerak or the Honor 4X, you can find out about that in a detailed review, which would be coming up soon.
