Update: Micromax is all ready to unveil its first Cyanogen Mod powered smartphone in India. The company has sent out a media invite for December 18, for the launch of the Micromax Yu. Well, the good news is that you won’t have to wait too long to get your hands on it. Micromax Yu First CyanogenMod Phone is coming exclusive on Amazon, today. Amazon has listed the phone on their website.

The Indian smartphone maker recently struck a deal with Cyanogen Inc, announcing an exclusive partnership with the company in India.With the company signing an exclusive partnership with Micromax, it also means that OnePlus One handsets bought in India will no longer be supported by Cyanogen.

If latest reports are to be believed, Micromax Yu’s First CyanogenMod Phone is just a re-branded version of Coolpad F2. Some images were leaked online, showing the similarities between two phones.

Coolpad F2 was launched in China couple of months back. The smartphone comes in two different models. While one is powered by a MediaTek 1.7Ghz MT6592 octa core SoC, the other one is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 processor.

Some earlier report suggested that Yu smartphone will have LTE support and will be powered by the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 615 chipset. The Snapdragon 615 is a brand new SoC based on octal-core architecture. The big deal about the chipset is that it does not only support 4G LTE networks in India, but also supports 64-bit applications, if the relevant software support is available.

Micromax will be launching its ‘Yu’ series of smartphones in India on December 18. Micromax has teamed up with Cynogen in an exclusive deal where the Cynogen will only support Micromax’s forthcoming YU smartphones. Earlier this week, Micromax launched the company’s latest selfie-focused smartphone, Canvas Selfie. The smartphone comes with a 13-megapixel front-facing camera with LED flash. It also has a 13-megapixel rear camera with LED flash and a Sony sensor. Micromax launched the phone in the presence of tennis players Sania Mirza, Ana Ivanovic, Kristina Mladenovic and Daniela Hantuchova.

Cyanogen has announced its upcoming Themes app that will act as a store front for Cyanogen OS users to browse and download free and paid themes. The company also announced that the first release of the Themes app will come preloaded on the device from the new online brand ‘YU’ owned by YU Televentures, a wholly owned subsidiary of Micromax.

Cyanogen Inc. also launched a Themes Design Challenge, inviting artists and content creators to submit original theme packs for the Cyanogen operating system, the OS that comes pre-installed on mobile devices. Participants can enter designs that customize nearly all components of the mobile user interface, including wallpapers, icons, fonts, boot animations, and controls.

Winners of the Themes Design Challenge will receive a prize that includes “Cyanogen branded gear and a device of their choice (from two device options) to be announced with the winners in December. The winners’ creations will come preinstalled on Micromax’s “Yu” range of devices that will launch in India next month. The contest ends on December 14, and the entries will be judged by a team of Cyanogen team members.

The Indian smartphone maker Micromax today unveiled a new range of devices under ‘Yu’ brand, focussed on the fast growing segment of tech enthusiasts. Yu Televentures, a subsidiary of Micromax, has partnered with Cyanogen to offer customised user experience to the users.

Micromax co-founder Rahul Sharma said ‘Yu’ brand will be a game changer, not just in India, but globally too. Yu has been envisioned for building an ecosystem of connected devices and offer customised experience to users. The brand will engage directly with end users, providing them with bootlegger access to help them come up with software upgrades that they want on their phones; he added.

CyanogenMod is an open source operating system for smartphones and tablet computers, based on the Android mobile platform. It is developed as free and open source software based on the official releases of Android by Google, with added original and third-party code. CyanogenMod offers features and options not found in the official firmware distributed by mobile device vendors.

Yu Televentures, will import handsets from China and sell in the Indian market, the promoter said in incorporation documents filed with the Registrar of Companies (RoC). Yu is the Pinyin romanisation of several Chinese family names. In March this year, the Micromax founders had incorporated another company, Mobi Serve, which was a majority owned by Vikash Jain and Sumeet Arora.
According to a press release, Micromax and Cyanogen were in dialogue for the past one year, under the Project Yureka. Project Yureka was conceptualised to engage directly with consumers and bring innovations that solve consumer problems, not just software or hardware upgrades and is taking the shape of a new brand ‘YU’.

According to the latest report of research firm IDC, the smartphone market in India grew at 84% year-on-year in the quarter ended June 2014 to 18.42 million units from 10.02 million units. Korean handset maker Samsung led the smartphone market with 29% share, followed by Micromax 18%.
