Google is trying hard to reduce the cost borne by customers when it comes to not just android smartphones but also now is the case with the bandwidth as well. After launching Android One smartphones last year, it’s now working hard towards faster website load time. Google wants to hold on to the next billion smartphone users which is not just possible with the affordable android smartphones. Even in this year’s Google IO, Google had mentioned that slow connections is still an issue. Google has launched a project internally which is dubbed as “Google Web Light” which is a service which optimizes the websites with upto 4x faster load time and also consumes less data which in turn saves around 80% of data as shown in an example below.
Without Google Web Light:
With faster load times and less bandwidth data consumption, Google seems to have cracked this pretty well. Google Web light automatically activates when it figures out that you are on a slow network which is a general phenomenon in the developing markets. While this feature won’t be rolled out in United States anytime soon, as of now this is available in Indonesia. Very soon, this will be rolled out in few other countries. As of now there are no specific time lines on by when Google will be rolling out this new feature.
With Google Web Light:
As you can see that we have compared the androidadvices.com, the left hand side image is the full version with it Google web light, while on the right hand side it’s rendered on the Google Web light version which has reduced colors and detailing. The overall loading time was blazingly fast and also the bandwidth consumed was 80% less for opening this page.
This feature should be rolled out in all the markets, just not in the developing markets. Google has also got a dedicated page from where you can experience the “Google Web Light”.
