How to Update SONY Xperia PLAY with Official Beta ICS 4.0 Firmware

Xperia PLAY LogoIt’s not just Samsung which gets updates or say leaks, SONY too joins the update parade as it has just got an all new update of ICS Android 4.0.3 firmware which we will be checking out in the due course of this article. Please note that this is a beta firmware update released by SONY and also we don’t have any clue on by when this update will be released officially. In the due course of this article we will be checking out on what are the list of pre requisites you need to follow and then also a detailed tutorial on how to apply this update.

Let’s get started with the pre requisites below and then a detailed tutorial to update with the same.

Essential Pre Requisites:

  • All the data there in your SONY Xperia PLAY needs to be backed up, ensure that you are using the below mentioned steps to backup all your data. Since this update is not yet officially pushed via KIES, it won’t be detected in KIES as of now.

SMS – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Call Log – Call Log and Restore
Images, Songs, Videos, Files – Copy to internal / External SD Card,
APN and MMS Settings – Note down from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names

  • Minimum charge left in the phone should be 80% so as to ensure that the phone doesn’t get turned Off in the middle of firmware update. (If you don’t follow this step then the chances are more that your phone may get DEAD for which we should not be responsible).
  • Enable the USB Debugging in your Xperia PLAY from the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging”. The USB Debugging option should be ticked as shown in the below screen capture.

  • Disable all the security suites installed in your computer and uninstall all antivirus tools in your computer so as to ensure that the firmware update is not interrupted in the middle of the process.
