How To Update Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 to Gingerbread XXKPE 2.3.4 Firmware

Galaxy SL LogoWe are aware of the recent issues which most of the Galaxy SL I9003 users are facing after updating their devices with the latest firmware as most of the users reported about the non-functional of the camera just after applying the update successfully. This issue is due to the kernel used in these firmwares which are buggy and cause issues like these, since these firmwares are in the beta mode such issues are expected. So, let’s check out another firmware version which is the latest and has lesser intensity bugs than all previous versions in the due course of this article. This all new firmware is dubbed as XXKPE 2.3.4 Gingerbread version. So, let’s check out the same and see on how you can update with this version of firmware.

This version is very much stable then compared to the previous firmware of XXKP9 2.3.4 Gingerbread version which is the best part of this firmware. Before we proceed to the updation of the firmware there are few rules and regulations which one has to follow to facilitate the smoother firmware update process as most of the times it has been found that due to not following of instructions, users face issues like poor battery backup even after the firmware update, issues related to the backing up of data.

We have mentioned the links clearly in the “Pre Requisites” section on how you can take a backup and also on how you can restore the same to your phone. Additionally for all the list of enhancements which comes with this version of firmware too are mentioned in the dedicated section which you will find in the next page of this article as the article is broken into different pages so as to further add up to the convenience.

Please note that this update is only meant for the phone with the model number Samsung Galaxy SL I9003 and not for any other similar looking models or similar sounding models like Samsung Galaxy S I9000M or Captivate, Mesmerize or even other phones like Vibrant etc. If you still proceed to update the device then you may even end up bricking up your phone or some keys won’t be responding as per the functions which these keys are meant to do. So, let’s proceed for the list of enhancements first which are listed in the next page and then followed by the pre upgrade instructions and then procedure to update the phone.

Do i need to Root my Phone before i update with this firmware?
The answer is “NO” as rooting is different from the firmware update. Rooting basically opens up the device with which you can even access the system level files which cannot be done in a non-rooted phone. This firmware update doesn’t require you to root your phone before you proceed for the firmware update. Another thing is that if you have already rooted your phone before then after applying this firmware the root access will be revoked and then again you will have to root your device to get the root access.

Note: You will have to reconfigure the APN settings after updating the firmware to access the data services and the services as all the Internet APN settings will be reset. You will have to contact your Service provider to get more info on the APN Settings. Not to forget also configure the MMS Settings. Also, we hold no responsibility if anything goes wrong which is an unlikely event if anything goes wrong. Most of the users forget this step and end up experiencing difficulties in accessing the internet after updating the phone.

    Hi guyz,

I have successfully upgraded my Samsung galaxy S gtI9003 from froyo 2.2.1 to gingerbread 2.3.6 via samsung Kies. To be more specific :

    previous firmware version – PDS:KB2/PHONE:KA5/CSC:KA6(INU)
    Latest firmware version – PDA:KP2 /PHONE:KP4/CSC:KPH(INU)

The phone is working fine so far. Got some issue with wifi disconnect initially for a couple of times but it did not recur. The phone battery life has increased and may be speakers. Few options added in the application settings. Not many visible changes. The steps i followed:
    – Take backup
    – Reset factory settings
    – Go to recovery mode clear cache
    – apply upgrade via kies
    – again clear cache from recovery mode
    – DONE!!

Found issue with connectivity to kies. Resolved by making windows 7 search for drivers when i connect phone. Luckily it found the drivers and the connection is all OK.

    Thanks-

    Dear Neal,

Thank you for the regular updates. I have been judiciously following your tutorials on upgraded to XXKPE and rooted the same. And, I now have two problems.
The camera isn’t working and the system time and date are reset to 1999 and requires a restart to get it right (time and date configured to use network-provided values).
Restarting at times brings me to a “POWER RESET OR UNKNOWN UPLOAD MODE” screen and requires battery removal.

An update indicating that there is a newer firmware upgrade would have been helpful earlyon in the post would have been very helpful.

Will try updating with the XXKPH version.

Perhaps a FAQ on the different versions of firmwares available would be of help to noobs like us. I can see that you have quite a lot of those 🙂

Hey friends, i finally upgraded my galaxy OS from stock froyo to gingerbread 2.3.4 (xxkpe) all thanks to this marvelous tutorial (and a bit of my intellect!). So for all those guys having problems to get started here are a few must knows:

-to get to download mode start by pressing the volume down key followed by the home button and finally the power button. Keep holding them pressed until you see the “Download mode” appear.
-Connect to the PC via USB cable (make sure you’d started the Odin application already on your PC before attempting to connect)
-In Odin you only need to select the necessary files for PIT, Bootloader, etc as mentioned in the tutorial (no hassling with the “re-partition” or any such other options)
-Choose to START and let the flashing complete successfully. Odin should let you know when its done.
-Now unplug your device from PC and long press the power button to power it off and restart in recovery mode.
-Getting my phone to recovery state was a bit challenging but this is how I did it; Start by pressing the Volume Down button and then home button followed by the power button. Keep the combination pressed until you feel a slight (start up) vibration and immediately let go off the home button at that instant (while still holding onto the power and VD button combination). If you did this successfully, you have “recovered”! because the first time I tried erroneously and my screen flashed some weird “unkown mode” and gave me a start.
-Now choose to wipe out cache as necessary (follow the tutorial instructions).
-Restart your phone. But the job’s only half done (yeah you heard’t right!)
-FLASH YOUR PHONE ALL OVER AGAIN using the exact process. A second flashing is quintessential for your device to function like a Galaxy SL. I’ve faced no issues with camera (both primary and secondary), no ringer issues, no battery drainage and the overall transition from Froyo to Gingerbread is breathtaking.

Only reason i have updated the FW is to root the phone. (SG i9003)

I’m relatively new to android and dunno much about rooting and all. But i’m just as eager to try out the new gingerbread on my half year old Galaxy SL gt I9003 with the following system info:
    -firmware v: 2.2.1,
    -baseband v: I9003DDKA5,
    -kernel v: 2.6.32.9 root@SE-S605#1
    -build no: FROYO.DDKB2

Now help me with this, do I update to XXKPE or XXKPH? I do have the zip files for the latter but need help with the flashing (so u see we all want you to come up with a tutorial for that just like u did for XXKPE:)
And yes, in case I unfortunately manage to brick my phone then do I stand a chance to downgrade it back to froyo (got the zip files for froyo stable version too;) Lastly would my “upgraded” OS be recognized by KIES?

    Hello Neal.,

I Got the Samsung Galaxy SL i9003, and I tried to update my firmware using the samsung KIES.
But when I Connect the device to the software it appears that the samsung galaxy SL i9003 firmware is
not upgradable…, And then I read your from this article that it is possible to update my firmware.,.

If I update my firmware, what would be the consequences i am facing.?
And have you fixed all the know bugs?

    Thank you very much!

    hi Neal
I had upgraded to your XXKP9 version yesterday and everything is working fine. i have a major problem in that whenever the phone goes into sleep mode it goes into silent and when i press the power button it again comes back to normal mode. any calls in between remain in silent mode and i have missed at least 10 calls since morning because of this. Also some of the setting like size of font are going back to default inspite of changing it a number of times

    thanks and regards

Thanks much for giving comprehensive details for installing ginger bread. I have got my I9003 upgraded to Ginger bread.
While in the process, the only hiccup I faced was …. after installing the OS the next restart just showed me “power reset or unknown upload mode” on the screen and never let me restart / shutdown / boot. It made my phone dumb.

I was horrified by seeing that and started googling around for finding the relevant info but unfortunately I couldn’t manage to find a perfect solution. I went ahead blindly and restarted the whole installation all over again as a result I could now got it working with out any issues.

Thanks much once again. You rock !!

      August 24, 2011 at 9:29 pm

      Hi Kira,
i would not advise you to update… especially if you want your phone to recognize arabic…i made the mistake and updated to 2.3.4 and:

lost arabic….camera doen’t work….random hanging when i try to unlock the phone….youtube doe not work…video playback does not work,,,and so on.

then i tried to roll back to 2.2.1…and got a heap of other problems, abd still no arabic…eventually i had to send the phone back to the dealer for repair…still waiting if these things will be sorted out 🙁

Hi Neal, as I promised to tell you…below are my observations :

    1. Not able to connect to KIES.
    2. Not able to connect to Marcket.
    3. After flashing 2 or 3 times, Camera starts working.
    4. Getting error of “KERNEL PANIC MODE UPLOAD”
    5. After getting above error if try to Switch off Phone then “POWER RESET OR UNKNOWN UPLOAD MODE” message comes.
    6. One more point… Google.Framework force closed, google.gapps.Force close errors are coming.
    7. Data is not syncing with Email Accounts already added.

    TO: EVERYONE HERE

Just reflash the firmware if you have any problems, it will cover any problems you have with your phone.

    TO: NEAL

For Gingerbread frimwares, they have to always be flashed twice as ODIN cannot cover the modem and some other rfs files during the first flash. Please add this piece of information into your article.

What thing I observe after I updated my firmware to Gingerbread XXKPE 2.3.4, when I installed any software app, it is installed successfully. But after I reboot my unit, the app is gone and uninstalled. Same thing happen when I updated the time zone, whenever I reboot, it always come back to default setting. Same also with the background. What do you think is it the firmware/software problem or the unit hardware has the problem? Thanks in advance

Hi Neal! I have a problem with my Samsung Galaxy SL I9003. Before I upgrade to Gingerbread XXKPE 2.3.4 Firmware, the 1st problem I encountered was the battery drained faster than before. I tried to turn off both wifi and bluetooth but still my unit’s battery still drain fast. 2nd problem that I encountered, when I opened the Google application, this error “”The application Google services Framework(process com.google.process.gapps) has stopped unexpectedly.” always appeared. This happened on some of the application that comes with my unit. So I tried to update my firmware to Froyo 2.2.1, following strictly your procedure, but I observe the same problem. One thing also, I tried to install YM software and it was properly installed. When I turn off the unit, the YM software was automatically uninstalled. Then I tried to install the Gingerbread 2.3.4 firmware, but same problem I encountered. Please help me to resolve this problem. Thanks in advance.

    Hi Neal,

From the last time I had tried to update XXKP7 then XXKP9 and then last Stable version you had given of XXKD2.

After that i got updates via Kies also….

But till now my mobile has not came in to the normal state.

Currently I am not able to access any application…. also It gives me error like Google Frame work app force closed.

All teh application which has came already installed or downloaded from Marcket are being forceclosed….

Now can you suggest what should I do ? Just to ensure…I have cleared the cache and follow complete process word to word as you had mentioned every time in the article.

Should I try this version to upgrade ?
