Samsung Galaxy S2 GT I9100 – Steps to Install Gingerbread 2.3.5 XWKI8 Firmware

Samsung Galaxy S2 New LogoFor all those who has recently updated their Samsung Galaxy S2 handset now has another reason to smile as a new update in the form of Gingerbread 2.3.5 has arrived and the version is named as XWKI8. This update comes as a respite for all those who had some issues pertaining to the battery indicators and also issues regarding the network issues from time to time along with the force close errors. Not to worry about the issues anymore as we have been using this version from a quite a few days and we are glad to say that we haven’t found a single bug as of now.

So in the due course of the article we will see on how you can apply the update. The best part of this firmware is that anyone with their Samsung Galaxy S2 GT I9100 handset can proceed to apply the update of this XWKI8 irrespective of the current firmware, the only condition being is that this phone should not be a network locked device. Also note that updating your Galaxy S2 device will in no manner will be unlocking the phone.

This update of XWKI8 is not a KIES release and is the beta release and is in no way an official update released by the Samsung Electronics. Also, there is no ETA on by when this update will be pushed via KIES. Adding to the convenience, we have ensured that the article is splitted into different pages wherein in this page you will see the list of pre requisites which you need to follow and then in the next page we will see on how you can update your phone with the set of instructions.

Rooting Information:

  • Please note that if you proceed to update with this version of firmware then the phone will not be rooted in any manner and also just in case if you have rooted the phone then after applying the update the phone will be losing the root access. We will soon come out with the procedure on how you can root Galaxy S2 GT I9100 on XXKI8 Gingerbread 2.3.5 firmware, so stay tuned to
  • Please note that if you are on the custom firmware then you will have to ensure that you get into the recovery mode first and then clear all the cache from the recovery mode which can be done by following 1 -2 -3 steps below. Please note that by doing so you will be losing all the data in your phone, so you need to backup the data by following the instructions below and then proceed for 1-2-3 steps which are mentioned below.

SMS – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
ContactsSync with the Gmail application,
Call Log – Call Log and Restore
Images, Songs, Videos, Files – Copy to internal / External SD Card,
APN and MMS Settings – Note down from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names

  1. Turn Off the Phone so that you can enter into the recovery mode.
  2. Enter recovery mode by pressing  Volume UP on Volume Down Key + OK button, and holding both simultaneously press the Power Button.
  3. In recovery mode select the options, “Wipe data/factory reset”, “Wipe Cache partition” and then after that choose the option of “Go Back” and select “reboot system now” to reboot the phone.

Once you are done with that you will now need to follow the list of Pre Requisites which are mentioned as it is so as to ensure that the firmware is updated successfully without any issues.

After this you will have to proceed to the next page where the instructions to update Samsung Galaxy S2 GT I9100 are mentioned. Alternatively you can also update your phone with the XXKI3 Firmware by watching the below mentioned Video.

There are actually numerous details like that to take into consideration. That could be a great point to deliver up. I offer the ideas above as basic inspiration however clearly there are questions just like the one you convey up where an important thing will be working in trustworthy good faith. I don?t know if greatest practices have emerged round issues like that, but I am certain that your job is clearly recognized as a good game. Both boys and girls really feel the impact of just a moment’s pleasure, for the rest of their lives.

Im very sorry if this post is long and any help is very much appreciated !!
I am really clutching at straws now ?? Ive been searching and searching on how to get \orange signal Boost \ on my s2 ……
I was originally on gingerbread 2.3.4 XXKI1 ….. i didnt have signal boost nor could i find it …. i then heard about ICS and the signal was better so i flashed ICS XXLPH with odin and still no signal at home !!!!! I have tried some zip files of signal boost but cant install the zips in recovery …it comes up with an error and aborts ??
It seems that the orange signal boost app is not compatible with ICS …. so i would like to get gingerbread 2.3.5 BVKJ4 firmware package if possible ??
I managed to find this zip file I9100BVKJ4_I9100ORAKJ4_I9100BVKJ4_HOME.tar.md5 and also SS_DL.dll BUT when i flashed ICS it had 4 files ???
    Thanks for any help

I have an issue with the silent mode. Earlier I had three modes – Sound on / vibrate / silent. Now there’s only “sound on” and “vibrate” the silent mode is gone (i.e no vibration either) which I find extremly irritating since I need it to be silent most of the day.

Any clue how to fix this?

Hi there, I’m seeking some advice to rescue my Samsung Galaxay S2 i9100G. I tried to root it 2 days ago and maybe of i chek the box of repartition in ODIN, then my phone was turns become black lock screen. After that i try to flash the firmware. Now it only come to the welcome screen then just stop at there. I able to go in Download mode but dont know whats the reason KIES cant detect my phone and let me do the emergency recovery(Odin still can detect my phone). How can i do the restore on my phone, please advice.

i heard the connect the jig micro USB connector can help to go for factory restoring mode, but my situation will it still work?

    • NeaL Pradeep

      November 10, 2011 at 10:48 am

No, connecting jig here wont mean anything! check with the drivers and it wont work for I900T just in case if you are trying to update it on I9000T!

    November 7, 2011 at 5:34 am

Jez, no need to worry or buy a 32gb card!

Just download App Backup from the marketplace. It looks like a small floppy disk with a B on it.

Let it run a backup of all your apps and games. It will create the backup files in their own folder ‘AppBackup’.

Then just plug the phone in to your PC.

Locate the backup folder and drag it onto your desktop.

Update the firmware, and when done, just re-download App Backup from the marketplace then put the copied folder back on the phone using the same method as before. Then just go in to it and use it to reinstall all your apps and games. Bit long winded, but saves an additional purchase if you’re short on funds.

    Hope this helps.

Will this update work on my phone?
Samsung Galaxy SII I9100 (China Version)
    Model Number: GT-I9100
    Android Version: 2.3.3
    Baseband Version: I9100XXKE7
    Kernel Version: root@DELL145#2
    Build number: GINGERBREAD.DXKG4

I bought it in Beijing. Will i still be able to input chinese text and receive chinese sms? Also, you say i must ensure it isnt a locked phone, how would I check? Sorry I am new to this, but the current Android on here is a China Unicom version with a bunch of annoying apps I cannot remove and also it doesnt let me install google maps on this version. So I think it would be best to update to this version. Any advice is appreciated!

Can I do this update on my samsung galaxy sII as below:
Samsung Galaxy SII I9100 (China Version)
    Model Number: GT-I9100
    Android Version: 2.3.3
    Baseband Version: I9100XXKE7
    Kernel Version: root@DELL145#2
    Build number: GINGERBREAD.DXKG4

If so, after I update to 2.3.5 will i still have the ability to write in Chinese Characters and receive messages in chinese characters?

I guess you mean well but…

    VERY badly written article,

    Page full of adds,

zip file link DOES NOT contain the files indicated (perhaps you renamed them),

zip badly created with zips within zips,

people asking for help get none of any use that I can see,

warnings about bricking contract phones on another page all together,

Like I said man: I guess you mean well (even if you don’t all the pop up adds must mean you are on a pay role), but I could do a better job of explaining this to noobs after drinking a whole bottle of vodka.

You sir are going to give android updating a bad name.

Hello Neal! I know it’s going to sound weird… but my Bell Galaxy S2 I9100 doesn’t reset to factory default. I’ve been getting the multiple ‘Force Close’ pop-ups and was told upgrading the firmware would fix it (official or not). I did the “Wipe data/factory reset”, “Wipe Cache partition” thing… by holding the buttons, got the message that everything was cleaned, then when I reset, everything’s still there in the background, even the popups.
Can you help me out in any way? I can’t access the menu or type in the combination to factory reset because of the Force Close popups…
    Appreciate any help!

I’m sorry this is probably going to sound like a totally rookie question but i’m getting so confused with all the threads and forums! (not that you’re update isn’t clear).

    I currently have:
    baseband: XXKI1
    Kernel: root@dell149 #2
    build: xwKi4

i flashed my phone to get it to xwki8 (and then factory reset). I want to flash it to the newer KI3 as i’m still having massive battery issues (this is why i flashed it in the first place). Can i just upgrade using the KI3 kernel (.tar file)? i think i’m getting confused because on some threads it says to use the same kernel but i think that’s for rooting? otherwise how on earth would you upgrade it if you’re using the same kernel?

Any insight would be much appreciated! I already have odin.. i just want to be sure i’m flashing the latest firmware and which file(s) to use…

    thank you

    • NeaL Pradeep

      October 13, 2011 at 5:22 pm

that is because 3G still doesnt have seamless connectivity, so as that switches to EDGE! Report the same to your operator!

3G is a network standard and HSPA+ is the technology that is defined under the 3G standard.

Are you guys nuts ive spent ages getting my phone set up .Im not going to start from scratch setting up and reinstalling
all the apps etc .I think i will wait until there is a OTA update for the minor tweaks its not worth it. If you have brand new one out of the box unlocked fine i would do it (which mine was ) .Meh to much work

    Hi Neal,

I have Galaxy S2 I9100 and using stock rom DXKI2, unrooted. I wish to upgrade this to XWKI8 per your guide.
I am concern about the last process of “Wipe data/factory reset and “Wipe Cache partition”.

My question: If I do the wipe, will all data and cache, saved for games, notes and applications be wiped off too?
I am sure I can back up some of these data but for games, not really sure. There are certain game which I would like to maintain the level last played.

Thank you for your time for this somewhat silly query.
