Rooting Information:
- Since it’s a Stock beta release, applying this update will neither root the phone or the warranty will get void.
- For your convenience, we have splitted this article into different sections which are Pre Requisites and then followed by the procedure to apply the XWKH4 update on your Samsung Galaxy S2 GT I9100 smart phone. So, let’s gets started with the instructions starting from the next page.
- Also, you are not required to root the phone before applying this update on your S2 and it’s you can proceed to update the phone from any of the firmware version which is currently on your S2.

- So, let’s proceed with the pre requisite instructions first and then followed by the actual instructions to update the phone with the latest firmware version of Gingerbread 2.3.4 XWKH4.
Pre Requisites:
- In the process of firmware update, the device will encounter with the data loss. The data which is there in the phone needs to be backed up. Generally the data which is stored in the phone by default are the SMS and the Contacts. Other data like images, videos, music and other files can be copied to the external / internal SD card which is not tampered with even after the firmware gets updated. You can alternatively backup the corresponding data by the tips which are mentioned below,
SMS – Use “SMS Backup & Restore app”,
Contacts – Sync with the Gmail application,
Songs, Videos, Files – Copy to internal / External SD Card,
APN and MMS Settings – Note down from the path “Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names”
- You will need to have a computer / Laptop in place which should have a minimum of Windows XP / 7 / Vista with the admin privileges along with the full read / write access in that computer. Preferably flash in the home computers and no in the Office computers as generally computers in Office have restricted access.
- Ensure that all the drivers are installed, the simplest way you can ensure is to check whether the KIES is installed in the computer or not. If KIES is not installed then you need to install the same in your computer.
- Note that you only use the Odin version which is there in this article as if you continue to proceed with any other version then there is a possibility of failure in firmware update.
- In the due course of this firmware update you will also lose the APN Settings, so you will have to note down the APN Settings which are there in your phone or else you will have to contact your service provider for the same. To manually note down the settings, you will have to go to the path Applications > Settings > Wireless and Network > Mobile Networks > Access Point Names where you will find both the MMS as well as the APN Settings which are responsible for the Internet access as well as the Multimedia messages.
- Last but not the least you will have to note that this update is only available for the Samsung Galaxy S2 GT I9100 phones and not for any other similar looking phones like Captivate, Mesmerize, Galaxy S GT I9000 etc.
Special Instructions for the users on Custom ROMs:
There are many components which gets installed in the phone when you are on a custom ROM, so to clear all these you will need to get into the recovery mode and then you need choose the option of Wipe data/factory reset and after that select Wipe Cache partition. Reboot your device by selecting reboot system now after selecting the former options. As soon as you do so, all the cache files and the custom ROM specific files are erased completely after which it will now become safe to proceed with the instructions.
