Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830 Gets Official Gingerbread 2.3.4 Update with DDKQ5

Galaxy Ace LogoGalaxy Ace S5830 users can now breathe easy as an all new update for the Galaxy Ace has arrived in the form of an update version Gingerbread 2.3.4. With the arrival of this Global Gingerbread 2.3.4 update which is having the version name as DDKQ5 and is among the stable releases OF ALL THE Gingerbread versions. Over a period of time there have been several beta versions which were seen on this site but due to some or other reasons users used to face some issues which now has been sorted out in this version of firmware. Though there is no exact clarity on where this update is pushed via KIES, we have a manual way with which you can update your Ace easily.

So, in the due course of this article we will see on how you can update with the same as this version comes along with a bunch of enhancements which too we will see in the dues course of this article and for your convenience, we have broken this article over a couple of pages so that all the different sections like Pre upgrade instructions, Enhancements and then followed by the Procedure to update with this version will be seen. Additionally, ensure that you are applying this update only on Galaxy Ace S5830 and not on any other phone as just in case if you still proceed for the update then there is a high probability that you may end up bricking up the device.

Highlight: The best part of this firmware is that anyone from any part of the World can proceed with the updation of the Galaxy Ace S 5830 device. The only thing you need to do is to just follow the instructions strictly which are mentioned in the due course of this article.

In the last two articles of the update for this Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830, it has been found that users were not following the procedure and due to which many of them faced some serious consequences due to which either the phones were not updated or the devices got halted in the amidst of updating it due to improper flashing of the phone. So, we appeal to all of you out here that kindly follow the instructions which are mentioned in the due course of this article so as to refrain from such incidents which will facilitate the smooth updation process of the device.

Rooting Information: Please note that, updating with this firmware version won’t root the phone in any manner or even won’t require you to root the phone before applying this update. Just in case if your phone is already rooted then you will have to enter into the recovery mode and then need to clear the cache and wipe the data to apply this update of DDKQ5.

Note : Please note that in the process of updation you will be losing all the data which is SMS, Contacts, Music, Videos and Pictures if they are stored in the phone. All the contents stored in your external SD Card will stay intact and no contents will be modified in the external SD card. Additionally, all the APN Settings as well as the MMS Settings too will be erased, so you need to ensure that you are noting all this settings somewhere so that you can then restore the same by configuring it manually once the firmware updation process is done. To know on how you can back up all your data, kindly refer to the “Pre Upgrade Instructions” which are mentioned in the Page No. 3.

Disclaimer : We take no responsibility in any manner if any damage occurs with your phone which is a very unlikely event if you follow each and every single instruction which is mentioned in the due course of this article. Although if at all there are any issues then do report us in the comments section and we will help you in solving the same.

Hi, I would like to know if this firmware update is affected by geographical location? ie I’m from south africa and my froyo baseband version is s5830xxkb1, do I not need a xxkb1 gingerbread baseband version, could this affect things like hsdpa availability as I know there are different frequencies for mobile internet in different countries?

    Thank you

Same problem here! I cannot download the DDKQ5, something regarding “page not found” and even though there’s DDKQ6 I read that DDKQ5 is better… your opinion?…
Also I got a a FROYO.UBKD1 / 2.2.1 and I would like to check with you if I can follow all the steps on this post because it seems like my carrier got the phone blocked. I just read that it might be a problem ‘case I’m located on Latin America but I’m not sure… and if you recommend DDKQ5 could you please try to upload the link again :3
Sorry for the questions but I’m new on this :S

    He Neil,

I’m from the philippines, i’m using galaxy ace froyo-ddkc1. it’s brand new an i want to upgrade this to gingerbread because we all know that it’s much better than froyo. i have downloaded all the necessary things to download and i ready to start the update but i want to hear it from you that its ok for me to update my galaxy ace froyo-ddkc1 to what you have here in your site ddkq5? i have took the time to read all the the threads here and some have problems, of course i don’t want that to happen to my phone.

Looking forward for you reply. thanks

        December 30, 2011 at 10:46 pm

I have been reading some informations on how to update/upgrade my Galaxy Ace Froyo-DDKC1 to gingerbread and i found out something about rooting the android phone.

If I do the instructions that you have said above. will this also root my phone? or do i still need to follow a different procedure for that?

Do i need to root my phone first so that i can upgrade/update it to gingerbread 2.3 or this will automatically be rooted if I follow your instructions and will also be upgraded/updated to gingerbread?

        Hoping for your quick reply.

Hey NeaL I think I know the problems with the “can’t access the recovery menu” or “I clicked the buttons you asked me to and it showed me a different thing” problems . First of all you DON’T need to press Power ON + Volume up + Home Button(Middle Button) . All you need to press is the Power ON + Home Button(Middle Button) . That’s the solution 🙂 Hope this works for all of you guys 🙂

Want to upgrade your Samsung Ace to gingerbread 2.3.4 (DDKQ6)….Don’t look for any other method……….they will upgrade your Ace in 1hr for free…..it is the safest way to upgrade your Ace……Don’t upgrade ur phone on Kies…..it is risky as your phone can get stuck……can hang or can brick…

I tried the version update of “GalaxyAce_S5830_DDKQ5_2.3.4” It worked perfectly for me. My phone is amazing fast and responsive. I just love it. The battery is also not draining. I am having samsung ACE and earlier version was android 2.3.1 froyo.
Follow steps mentioned till the message where it says wait for Blue screen in ODIN.(After you click on Start)
Nice job of http://androidadvices.com I will wait for next version release.

I have upgraded my samsung GT-S5830 to gingerbread-234 and I could not go into recovery mode ,so I reset my mobile using factory reset option.Later when I came to know from this site how to go into recovery mode ,I again re installed and used to clean the data and cache as suggested.I also used My Backup pro to re install my data and applications.
But now battery is getting drained faster and also charging faster,Also I have not seen any appreciable change .
    What could be the reason?

    • colin

      October 9, 2011 at 4:51 am

Did you have over 90% battery life when you did the upgrade as the info states lots of people ignore this and after upgrade it optimizes the battery. If not then your battery could have suffered reduced performance after being optimized on a low battery.

    Neal,

Till now, whatever updates I have applied on my mobile from your website; I got success in that and my mobile is working very nice.

Presently, I am on DDKQ5 and I want to apply Custom ROM “Ginger Real” released by you. When i gone through the questions / comments under that release, I understand that majority of the users / people are not successful in applying that update.

Tell me without any justification / condition, whether I have to aplly this update or wait for further release from your side. I don’t want endup in any bad situation.

    Thanks in advance buddy….

Thanks a lot for this! If it is possible for the article to be edited, please incorporate the alternate procedure – Home key + Power button – that most of us encountered. It would be much appreciated.

Special thanks to those who made the clarifications. 🙂

I actually did the 2.3.3 upadte today since i thought it wasnt out yet but it seemed that I screwed it up cause I didnt make any backups but all my apps are on my Sd wich arent shown how to get the original firmware back and let Kies do all the other updates. after that ill just inform vodafone of a factory reset 😀

IMPORTANT…!!!….All of you…..While upgrading your Samsung Galaxy Ace to official Gingerbread 2.3.4 through Kies software….Please assure that your Kies has a latest version…if not…..please upgrade it first……then try to upgrade your Ace…..Upgrade your phone only if you are using hi-speed internet through Wi-Fi…..it takes around 1 to 2 hrs (Please keep patience or wait while upgrade)….Do not use any USB broadband internet device as it’s speed is very low for updating your phone through Kies…..if you still getting any message on Kies while updating or it stops…..try again and again till you get the update to your phone….it’s normal…….All the Best…!!!

entering the recovery mode in galaxy ace requires us to press the power off button and the home button together. Pressing the volume up button is not necessary

      hi devesh ,
i have rooted phone on gignerbread . even if u root your phone u cant move your whole app on sd card . even if u use those mention application , some games wont set on sd card , cuz provider of that app/game ask android to be stay on phone memory .

gignerbread will automatically move 90 % of app to sd card and no need to other exrea application , i tested what i say .
beside u can root your phone like blink of eyes.

with what method or instruction u rootedd your phone ? can u give me link

Hi and sorry for the late reply. First i rooted my phone using upd_1.zip but it began to restart again and again so i unrooted it. Now i’ve rooted it with AceGingerRoot.zip and so far its working fine.Does this ROM support external ext2 partition?? ’cause i’ve already made an ext2 partition in order to use link2sd on my phone but when i open it, it says “superuser permission is granted” and after i select the ext2 partition it asks me to reboot. But after rebooting when i again open it the same procedure displays i.e.”please reboot your device to use link2sd”(or something similar to that). As of now i am using app2sd but still, all the apps could not be stored on sd.If at all this ROM doesn’t support ext2 partition pls suggest any other ROM(custom or official) which supports the ext2 partition.Thanx a ton…

    September 19, 2011 at 11:51 am

    Hi Neal,

I recently upgarded from Froyo to 2.3.4 ddq5. I had to use your method as Kies was unable to so, kept telling me ‘Unspecified error, Retry’. I then used your method and everything went well. But the recovery mode kicked in only on OK + Power instead of Volume up + OK + Power. ..Thanks Neal for the detailed steps, the upgrade went well.

But apart from the visual wall paper change, nothing really different i could see. Dont know yet to experience the battery enhancement. Will let you know.
Couple of things i wanted to ask, if you can help me please –

    1. When i connect my phone through USB to my PC, i am unable to see my SDcard/Phone details and able to see them only when i open KIES. And when i do open KIES and able to see the SD card details, the phone says, ‘No SD card detected’. Can i see my files without opening KIES or i would need them always ?

    2. Is there a ‘Alt+Tab’ feature for S5830? I would want to switch to the background program. Although i have the ‘program monitor’ widget, but it does not allow to go to the app but just shows the background app running. Is there any other way or i would have to download some app externally? If yes, which one would you recomend?

Thanks in advance Neal for your help…

    Hello!
Thanks for this great tutorial. I have followed up everything and I’m having the same issue as Jose Mendieta up there. I’m from argentina, my model is Samsung Galaxy ace GT-S5830L, and after the upgrade to this rom 3G was working fine (with froyo 2.2.1). now it doesn’t even connect. my APN’s are ok. Would you kindly have any ideas on what could I do before considering moving back again to Froyo? any help will be really appreciated.

    Thanks!

Juan, your problem is the Firmware, this firmware isn´t for Latam, recommend to make a good search for a Latam firmware for GT-S5830L, especial quote for “L”, it is very important.
      My provider wasn´t very helpfull.
      Let me know how ends.

Hi NeaL. I have installed this new version of Gingerbread, hoping to solve my main issue, cann´t get 3G to work for Claro (Panama), have setup the APN date (ba.amx), but issue persists, finally, on saturday, take it to Claro support, and said that Gingerbread (any version) is the culprit of the situation, my GT-S5830L is not suitable for Gingerbread (I guess on Claro network), so, they suggest me to go back to Froyo, but on Samfirmware, didn´t find one for latam, tried one of ones overthere, and nothing, cann´t get 3G to work, is there any Froyo for latam available?. My cell is working fine, not mentioning the fact that no 3G so far. Will appreciated so much, and I mean so much, if you can guide me, or let me now, what can I do to resolve this.

      September 13, 2011 at 3:54 am

Thanks for androidadvices – my Ace was successfully updated!

    Some comments:
    1) My old version was Android 2.3.3 (S5830XWKP6);
    2) Necessary to have Kies on PC – in other case not all drivers are available, and no “yellow box” in Odin…;
    3) Entering into recovery mode – after combination + + my Samsung fall into RAMDUMP Mode (ARM9 Mode) + no reaction on any keys… Necessary to take off battery… So, in order to enter into recovery mode, I used only + -> press few seconds… After that everything goes without surprises.

    Once more, thanks.

    Dear Neal,

I have upgraded my Galaxy Ace to this new official release and it’s working like a charm. Battery life is also improved compared to earlier versions. GREAT job done guys. Keep it up…….

After use, only one observation I made is about the PHOTO quality. I think, its little reduced as compared to earlier. Please check at your end. Has anybody noticed this ??

Thanks a lot for releasing all the updates……

    • NeaL Pradeep

      September 12, 2011 at 10:12 am

WHICH PHOTO QUALITY YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT!?

      • Jagdish

        September 12, 2011 at 3:09 pm

        Dear Neal,

I am talking about the quality of photographs taken by using phone’s 5 MP camera.

          September 14, 2011 at 10:53 pm

what issue you are facing with the camera quality?

        • Jagdish

          September 15, 2011 at 10:30 am

          Dear Neal,

Compared to earlier, as and when I am taking photos, the face / skin colour is appearing slightly yello/golden and not the original colour of skin which I was getting earlier. I am not able to explain the exact colour but, definately there is a difference between earlier photos and now. I have verified the same 4-5 times and then, sent my observation to verify / confirm at your end. Please also note that due to this problem, I have flashed my mobile again and also cleared the catch using the recovery mode but, still having the same problem.

          Please revert urgently……

Wow! I’m so impressed with this upgrade, from Froyo 2.2 to Gingerbread 2.3.4 ddkq5. This is my first upgrade, which just consumed 5:41 minutes, and no problem found. I can make much better video 640×480 less flickering than using froyo 2.2. I will do another test, and will report soon. Overall, your tutorial of this official version works pretty well in my country Indonesia.

Thank you so much, Neil! (“,)

    Help for every one

If any one is stuck in downloading mode then dont worry. Exit the Odin downloader application on your pc and take off the battery of your phone and start the upgrading process from the beginning.

And for the Recovery mode Hold the Ok Button and Power button long and release them only when you see the recovery menu

My confusion is this: is recovery mode the same as download mode?
Or should I just proceed & connect the usb cable after clearing cache?

I appreciate your good work, plz awaiting your reply

I have successfully upgraded to gingerbread 2.3.4 from froyo 2.2.1 thanks to your nicely written tutorial. But i found that the UI for the home screen did not change at all. Yes i got the new wallpaper, but it is not the same as the stock launcher in gingerbread (based on what i search on the internet). The homescreen UI somehow is still the same like what i had in froyo 2.2.1. Does this official update did not change the UI? But i do get other great new features like the video camera now support higher resolution of recording, the battery life has improve a lot and the phone internal memory is more free as more apps can now be move to the sd card. Thanks again and your reply is very much appreciate. 🙂

    • NeaL Pradeep

    September 3, 2011 at 12:52 am

wooooow my reply is not here , OOOOOHHHHHHH woooooooooooooooooow i did it 😮 , i was under lot of pressure during instalation ..

great thank to developer and u to post instruction ..

it works smoothly as girl’s skin :d .

and u know what :O from the beging of start using 2.3.4 i feel more speed in every thing .

1 – there was noticable delay between time u seelct “connect storage to pc” and time you can enter your sd card
in 2.2 froyo when u plugged to pc it take 10 sec to load and now its between 3 – 6

    2 – game speed 2x – 3x faster .
i can see speed of game increased 3X faster and yeah i tested it and i can tel .

3 – sluggish fast typing sms while landscape mode fixed now :d

4 – internal memory doesnt changed , lot of application that show “app not installed ” like office pro , crazy dart shooter and … fixed 😀 thanks to official gingerbread

5 in froyo(original version) fix delay when u select “disconnect from storage” and green android turn to brown .

6 and last one i noticed until now is :
when u select “disconnect from storage” in mention froyo u need to w8 untill sd card checking get over ,if you unplugged phone immediately phone freeezed and need to reboot !

7 : froyo(original ) was freezed lot ,but in gingerbread 2.3.4 it is much better

    Dear All,

To go into RECOVERY MODE you need to press HOME KEY & POWER KEY. Navigate using the VOLUME KEY & select using HOME KEY. Hope this will helps….

Please note that I have followed the above steps when i upgraded my Galaxy ACE to 2.3.4 XXKPH version earlier. At thattime, i was facing the same problem what you guys are facing now.

If this works then need to be included in the procedure given by Mr. NEAL for this new firmware to avoid any confusion and panic.

    All the best….

If it’s working then, post your comments so that others can make use of it.

To enter into the recovery mode, you will have to press down on Volume Down Key + OK button, and holding both simultaneously press the Power Button. Upon entering the recovery mode, you will have to choose the options Wipe data/factory reset and also you need to select Wipe Cache partition and then reboot your device by selecting reboot system now option.
is this step neccesary? because i reached this step and i saw that my phone (galaxy ace )has already updated to 2.3.4 gingerbread

    September 2, 2011 at 3:26 pm

    Hi everyone,

Has anybody updated the handset with this new OFFICIALLY released firmware (2.3.4) ?

I am planning to update my Galaxy ACE which has got XXKPH 2.3.4 at present and hence, before flashing, I want to know problems if any, faced by anyone while upgrading with this OFFICIAL release.

    Hi Neal,

I want to ask you abou VTOK. In order to use Gtalk, I have installed VTOK on my Galaxy ACE from the market but, it is not showing all the options which are mentioned in the FAQ of that application. Even, not able to call + add contacts etc. etc. One of my friend is using the same application on Galaxy S-II without any problem.

Can you please advise what could be the reasons and what is the solution ?

    Thanks in advance……

    • NeaL Pradeep

      September 2, 2011 at 4:50 pm

S2 and ace are both different handsets, so it may work on S2 due to better hardware! as of now it won’t work for Ace! you need to wait till the optimized version gets launched!

    Hi,
In the last step, where i have to enter into recovery mode, when i press volume up, ok, power button. i do not get the same screen.
I get a screen with samsung logo and it says “RAMDUMP mode (ARM9 Mode).
There are no options on the screen, and the only thing i can do is reboot.
    Am i doing something wrong

    • NeaL Pradeep

      September 2, 2011 at 5:19 pm

KINDLY CHECK WITH THE NORMAL BOOT, IS IT WORKING FINE?

      • shashank

        September 2, 2011 at 6:06 pm

Yes the normal boot is working fine.
And in “About Phone” i can see the firmware is updated.
However my installed apps, contacts and wireless access points are not deleted.
In fact the only difference i see is the change in user interface of the home screen. Even the keypad is the same (It should have, coz i have seen it in various articles titled “Whats new in android 2.3”.

Maybe the last step is the problem, since none of the cache data is erased.
Maybe i should try kies again, i have already tried it twice, unsuccessfully (it just fails while installing and i have to download the entire firmware again).

        • shashank

          September 2, 2011 at 7:29 pm

ok, so after searching for a long time, i found that the screen in the last step comes for if i press power and ‘ok’ button only.
So now my phone has been reset and it is faster, but ofcourse there are no softwares installed.
Kies is crappy piece of software; couldnt have upgraded my phone without your help.
          Thanks a lot
