HTC Sensation XE vs Motorola Droid RAZR Comparison

HTC is looking at a very strong comeback in the markets it has gone down, the mid-end Android budget phones and the most high-end segment as well. The Sensation XE from HTC is a modified version of the original HTC Sensation, with quite a few features added here and there and an amazing audio system by Beats by Dr. Dre on the phone, while the Droid RAZR, which was announced recently as the world’s slimmest smartphone also has powerful specs and makes a good competitor. The Droid RAZR was announced recently, one day before the Galaxy Nexus announcement from Samsung/Google, and is already available in India.

In this post, we take a look at the detailed specs of both the phones and compare them side by side, in every category:

Form Factor

The HTC Sensation XE is 126.1 x 65.4 x 11.3 mm, while the Motorola Droid RAZR is 130.7 x 68.9 x 7.1 mm. The HTC Sensation XE weighs 151 grams while the Motorola Droid RAZR is 127grams in weight, little lighter than the HTC Sensation XE.

The standard four Android buttons are present on the HTC Sensation XE and comes with a solid build quality that is tough on the exterior with a plastic back while the Motorola Droid RAZR has grand looks and comes with the same four Android buttons, as capacitive touch buttons, similar to the HTC Sensation XE.

HTC has added a dash of red to the phone, making it go in line with the Beats by Dr. Dre branding. The four capacitive buttons light up in red, the earpiece on the top is in red and the camera ring on the rear also comes with a shade of red, making it look attractive and different from other smartphones which all look almost the same when seen from a distance.

The HTC Sensation XE, comes with a S-LCD capacitive touchscreen of 4.3inches with a pixel density of 256ppi while the Motorola Droid RAZR has a Super AMOLED display of 4.3 inches as well and has a screen density of 256ppi, similar to the HTC Sensation XE. The HTC Sensation XE has a screen resolution of 540×960 pixels while the Motorola Droid RAZR also has a resolution of 540×960 pixels on it.

Both the phones support Multi-touch and there is an accelerometer and proximity sensor on both the cellphones as well. Also, the HTC Sensation XE has a gyro sensor on it while the Motorola RAZR doesnt seem to have one.

Both the displays are capacitive touch displays, support multi touch input and have support upto 16M colors.


The Droid RAZR from Motorola has a 8MP camera while the HTC Sensation XE has a similar 8MP Camera. The Sensation XE can take photos upto a resolution of 3264×2448 pixels while the Droid RAZR from Motorola also has a maximum resolution of 3264×2448  pixels. There is autofocus and LED Flash on both the devices as well.  Geo tagging, face detection and image stabilization are standard features on both the smartphones. Both, the Droid RAZR and HTC Sensation XE have a single LED flash.

Both the cameras shoot video at 1080p resolution, at full HD at 30 frames per second.

There is touch focus, face and smile detection and image stabilization on the Droid RAZR as well as the HTC Sensation XE.

Also, note that there is a secondary camera on both the devices, of VGA resolution in the HTC Sensation XE while it is a 2MP one on the Droid RAZR. This is used for normal camera purposes, by various camera based apps or for video calling via Skype, Google Talk etc.

The HTC Sensation XE has 4GB of internal memory, out of which 1GB is available for use and a microSD card slot that is expandable up to 32GB while the Motorola Droid RAZR has 16GB of internal memory and is extendable as well, with support upto 32GB on the microSD.

The HTC Sensation XE has GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900 bands and HSDPA 900/2100 bands which gives maximum speeds upto 14.4Mbps on HSDPA and 5.76Mbps on HSUPA while the Motorola Droid RAZR has similar bands on GSM and 900 / 1900 / 2100 bands on HSDPA, with a support of upto 21 Mbps on HSDPA and 5.76Mbps on HSUPA. The Motorola Droid RAZR has LTE support on it, also.

Both the phones have WiFi in them and support popular Wi-fi bands, compliant to the 802.11 standards. 802.11 b,g and n are supported and the WiFi Hotspot feature on them is also available on both the devices. To know how to enable Wifi Hotspot via tethering, follow these instructions here.

GPS is available on both the phones and Bluetooth 3.0 is enabled on the HTC Sensation XE while the Motorola Droid RAZR comes with Bluetooth 4.0. There is EDR support with A2DP on both the phones with LE+EDR on Droid RAZR.

The HTC Sensation XE and the Droid RAZR have an FM Radio on it, with RDS support.

Operating System and UI:

Both the phones run on Android Gingerbread 2.3.4, the latest version of Android from Google. The Motorola Droid RAZR does not come with its own User Interface, MotoBLUR, unlike the old phones while HTC has its own Sense UI, which is quite famous for its excellent gesture support and user friendly UI throughout the OS, built by the HTC engineers over the Android layout.

The HTC Sense is definitely fun to use and has lots of small add-ons everywhere while Motorola’s UI has refreshed iconography, user changes here and there and some slight improvements to the User Experience.

HTC has confirmed that the Sensation XE will be receiving the Ice Cream Sandwich Android 4.0 update soon, while the Droid RAZR will also be getting it.

Battery and Processor

The HTC Sensation XE has a 1730mAh battery while the Motorola Droid RAZR has a 1780mAh battery. The HTC Sensation XE, on 2G, has a talktime of upto 9 h 20 min and 310hours of standby time and upto 7 hours and 20 mins of talktime and 540 hours of standby time on 3G. While the Motorola Droid RAZR has a talktime of upto 12 hours and 204 hours of standby time, roughly on 3G networks.

The HTC Sensation XE and Droid RAZR come with powerful processors. On the HTC Sensation, there is a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor powered by a Adreno 220 GPU and supported by the Qualcomm MSM 8260 Snapdragon chipset while the Droid RAZR has a 1.2 GHz dual-core Cortex-A9 CPU, powered by a PowerVR SGX540 GPU and a TI OMAP 4430 chipset.

The HTC Sensation XE is a nice device overall, and comes with solid build quality and design in the software and hardware part while the Droid RAZR is really thin and looks appealing to the eye. Looking at the specifications, the Sensation XE is powered by a higher speed dual core processor, when compared to the Droid RAZR. The Droid RAZR would be the best buy if you’re looking for a device that catches the eye, feels light while you’re carrying it and an amazing Android experience, with some edge-cutting design while if you’re an audiophile, and love listening to music a lot or buying the phone primarily for entertainment purposes, the HTC Sensation XE is the best buy, with no compromises on the hardware or specifications, along with great audio.
