ZTE Star 3 reportedly to feature 5.5-inch 4K Display

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer ZTE’s upcoming flagship Star 3 smartphone could be the world’s first smartphone to feature a 4K Display. For comparison, the Galaxy S6‘s 5.1-inch QHD screen has a pixel density of 577ppi, while HTC’s One M9 with its 5-inch full-HD display offers 441ppi.

According to the report, the Star 3 will have a 5.5-inch 2,160 x 3,840-pixel resolution display, giving the display a pixel density of 808 PPI. The display may also feature a “new crystal structure” that would help keep battery consumption down despite all those pixels.

ZTE will apparently offer some super-thin side bezels for the Star 3 as well. Rumor has it that BOE Technology, a China-based company that manufactures and sells semiconductor display technologies, among other technologies, will be in charge of producing the high-resolution display.

Sharp already created a 5.5-inch display with such a resolution, though it’s not slated to go into mass production until 2016. Sharp has unveiled its 5.5-inch IGZO 4K panel that offers a pixel density of 806ppi. Samsung may also start mass-producing 5.9-inch Ultra-HD (4K) Super AMOLED display boasting of a pixel density of 700ppi in August this year. A report had indicated the South Korean giant was planning a 5.9-inch UHD (2160×3840 pixels) display for the Galaxy Note 4 successor.
